Ok, here's the deal......I've been curious about how a Kawi 900 engine would work in an FX-1. I've been pondering it since I started playing with the Kawi pump conversion last year and I just happen to come accross a deal I just couldn't refuse on a good running 900 motor (note to self: remove ebay from my favorites, it's dangerous!)
Weight:
I have absolutely no idea. Lifting the 701 and the 900 in and out of the hull it doesn't feel much heavier (very scientific...I know). I will weigh the two and post the diff.
Mounting/fitment:
The yamaha couplers use about a 1 1/4" offset flange and the Kawi is almost flat (see pics). That allows the 900 motor to sit about 2" further back than the 701 if I use the Kawi couplers. With that, the existing space between the engine and stock fuel tank mounts will let the 900 fit and still use the stock FX tank. The bed plate is very different on the 900, besides the mounts not lining up at all and being further apart because of the length of the motor, the 900 uses angle mounts at the front (like the FX) and straight mounts at the rear. I refuse to alter the hull to make this fit, so it's going to take a little creativity to make this engine mount up to the hull.....but that's half the fun!
Intake:
I plan to run the stock 900 carbs and flame arrestors and they will fit just fine.
Exhaust:
It looks like a Factory B-pipe can be made to work with the stock 900 ex mainfold. The kawi uses a 4 bolt pattern and there's room for a conversion block between the mani and head pipe. One bolt hole is shared and the other two would thread into the conversion block. This raises the pipe up a little and even helps with clearances. The chamber would have to be mod'd at the head pipe flange end to change the angle a bit, so cutting a pie wedge and re-welding would be needed (you can see this in the pic of the b-pipe int eh pic below if you look for it). If 1000cc bored/stroked Yami motors are breathing through a B-pipe, it should be workable for the 900. That's one option.
The other option is the stock 900 pipe. I didn't get one with the engine but it looks like it could possibly work too. There's 2 different stock pipes available, 1 for zxi and 1 for the sts. Both may work with mods.
The B-pipe seems the more attractive option, but I'll figure it out.
Electrical:
The stock 900 electrical box will fit vertically in the place of the stock battery and all cables reach/fit with no mods. This leaves me looking for a spot for the battery. The small light weight batteries folks use will fit easily where the Yami electrics use to mount. That's probably the easiest option to work.
Why do this?........Why not?? I like to tinker and had a spare FX kickin' around as a willing victim. It may work well and be a really cool ride, it may suck and be nothing more than a novelty.......only one way to find out:scratchchin:
I have no idea when I'll get to making this thing fit, but I'll post pics as I go.
