one 30" length of 2" square that fits receiver
two 42" length of 2" angle iron 1/8" thick
two 16" length of 2" angle iron 1/8" thick
1 piece of plastic wood commonly used for decking 1" thick

see pictures
1. grind 2" square on top edge so angle iron will sit flush
2. drill hole for hitch pin
3. weld 16" length of angle iron to end of 2" square that fits receiver (by using 16" end piece and notched piece this will give maximum contact area and number of weldable surfaces)
4. cut notch in 16" length of angle iron then weld to 2" square that fits receiver (determine bunk distance before welding notched 16" angle iron to reciever)
5. weld or bolt 42" length of angle iron to 16" angle iron making distance between 42" angle iron 14" so when you add plastic 1" this will make bunk center 13" (common beach cart bunk distance) you can vary that bunk distance measure your hull what works? 13" works for sj
6. prime and paint
7. cut plastic wood for bunk sliders bolt on
Happy new Year!

Where do you get the plastic wood? Lowes, Home Depot?
Great build, nice write up. I've seen guys trasport with these, I just can't do it. I got a fear some idiot will run into it at stop light and there goes the ski.

Yes home depot or lowes.A valid concern the collision thing.my friend has a trailer and and when he can't go I don't want it to stop me from riding there's good waves.I have it on my Xterra and it's built strong it will handle a blaster or provide shade while you work on your broke boat under the hatch back hey how about a daty glo trident? Pointing at the party behind you!

Nice! I built one over the summer to take my ski to college, modified a harbor freight hitch carrier for $50.
Just watch it close. The main tube is very weak. A guy showed up at WaveDaze with one bent right in half. I have also a seen them on the highways bent.

Good write up but 16 is too wide. Also the way you are doing them works but isn't the strongest way to do it. You are making the twist point in the center too small so your leverage all the way out is only on a small point. One more thing we have found now that us plastic bunks,,,, they slide way too well. So a small piece of turf on the center helps not drop a ski in a parking lot.

You can see how we make ours right on our site. We over build them to the hills and when ever people ask I have no problem telling them you won't find a stronger one out there. And for $200 (for painted) you can't beat that price.

Someone mentioned in earlier post the harbor frieght mod. The reason I made my own is because I thought it looked like it may not be strong enough. No personal experience on that. Bunk distance is 13'' the 16" refers to the angle iron welded to the 2" square under the long 42" pieces. I use two racheting straps 1 to keep the ski from going back and forth and the other one around ski and hitch hauler behind hood.Strap it down even in parking lot. Ha,ha,ha This was mainly a look at my hitch hauler take what you want and use for building your own.If someone wants to buy a ready made and pay for shipping that heavy thing to your door I would get one from the rad dudes.

Here a pic that chewy took the other day.

What is the weight on one of these? Is it available in aluminium?

Rad Dudes Hauler will hold anything you put on it. Your hitch will rip off your car before any damage happens to our hauler. We have had north of 600lbs on one with no problems.

Aluminum doesn't work they all bend. We even made a prototype one with an alum basket and a steal main tube and the basket still is too weak for us to want to sell.
