300/440/550 Hey, new JS550 owner here, the starter works, but the engine won't turn over

When I hit the start button, I can hear the starter going, but that's all I hear. The previous owner mentioned something about the solenoid being unpredictable and needing some cleaning every now and then(not sure what that means). I'm 100% new to JS550's and working on engines, but I'm willing to try, I have plenty of tools, and I can follow directions :bigok:

sounds like your starter isnt engaging all the way or one of your bendix gears are chewed. If the starter is doing something when u hit the button its probably has nothing to do with the solenoid.

The bendix may be stuck. Happened to me recently on a 650 superjet where only the starter would move. Inspect it and clean it really well.

I would remove the flywheel inspection plug and check to see if the flywheel itself is spinning when you work the starter button. It is possible that the starter is engaging to the flywheel but the the flywheel key is sheared. That will prevent the engine from spinning over.

STOOPIDSKI is on the right path. take that cover off and see if the flywheel spins. If you can get off the starter and take it apart. I used silicon, some oil, and a dremal tool and lightly bristled any junk off and then used a polisher connector to get good metal to metal contact inside of it. Good luck with them, they are pretty simple motors to learn from and youll enjoy it, I did.
