Help tuning/figuring out what Frankenstein ski I have…

Hey all I have an 87 JS550 (or I think it is). Bought it from a guy who had it sitting for years and he didn’t know much about it. The case is stamped with 440cc but the head has 15 bolts. The carb it came with (pictured left) is definitely not the stock one. It doesn’t have the rev limiter return line nipple. Also someone had to cut the barrels off the choke and throttle cable to link it to this carb.

I messed with this carb a lot trying to get it rideable. It was running all funky and I couldn’t figure it out so I bought an sbn 44 on eBay off a Yamaha. I was under the impression that all I needed was the spacer plate from the jug to the intake to push the carb out for clearance. However, the mating surface from the sbn to the intake is bigger than the current carb and manifold.

Did I get that wrong and needed an adapter or am I dealing with an intake manifold that is not a js550?

Need to get it running well enough so I’m not ripping off the next guy. Selling it before I move in 2 weeks across the country so any help is appreciated!

The bn carbs did not have removable jets like the sbn does. Yes by adding a 2nd bn 38 haha. I wouldn't use any kit other than a genuine mikuni kit if you didn't get one just because they're better quality. The a/m brand will get you by for now if you didn't get the mikuni kit. Are you positive its a 550 cylinder too? Only thing you can do is try it and see how it runs with a rebuild kit.

The only heads that don't have 15 bolts are the early model 440's with Aluminum cylinders , they have 17 bolts , all cast iron cylinders have 15 bolts.

Yes it’s a 550 with 15 head bolts. The 38 carb I rebuilt with a mikuni kit but runs like crap… Second guessing myself if I put it all back together correctly now. How many turns out for both screws is a good start? I messed with both just guessing configurations from 0-2 turns out.
