I am trying to figure out what is going on with this 91SJ. the problem seems to be getting worse or it could be do to the cold. when you hit the start button you can here the solenoid click then the starter will spin but it is not engaging with the fly wheel, at least that is what is going on as far as I can tell  . would this be a fixable problem or is the starter done. if its done where is the cheapest place to get a good replacement? ebay?

It's probably the bendix not throwing out to engage. You can take your's out, clean it with a solvent, then soak it in mineral oil for a day or and it'll probably work great again, as long as the springs aren't broken.

The biggest failure I have seen with bendix is broken weight holders and the keeper spring for the weights that will go out. If you dont replace the bendix with these parts failing then it will eventually hang and cause the starter to spin with the engine thus killing the starter motor very quickly. If the starter is spinning but not fast enough then you might have a weak ground or a failing positive cable to the starter especially if it has seen much salt water. Also a failing solenoid relay can cause weird starter issues.

check voltage at starter,if ok(something like 10 volts)time to pull front cover and check reduction gear maybe frozen or spring for weights gone ,if so steal on off old crankshaft seal works great
later cd
