head gasket question...???

im putting the head on but the gasket dosent seem right... you can see all the journals for the water to travel through for cooling in both the cylinder and the head... but when i lay the gasket on them, it almost covers everyone of these with the exception of 5-6 1/16" holes that come cut into the gasket that actually line up with the journals of the head to allow water to pass through

That looks like mine. Do you still have the old one? I think they do that to slow the water down some.

Wrong headgasket! Get a OEM Yamaha gasket for a 99-up...The gasket you have is aftermarket and made for the early 701 that uses the older design head with longer slots for the water jacket. You have a late model head that has bridges in what used to be the long open jackets, so you have to use the later model gasket as the cooling holes were moved to clear the bridges in the newer head.
