Hauling Ski and Boat

Has anyone come up with a good way of doing this? I just purchased an 18' fish/ski boat and I'm trying to figure out a good way to get both the boat and ski to the lake, without taking two vehicles.

Are any of the cargo carriers that some of you use for your ski's strong enough, or even made, to hook a boat trailer to? I'm guessing the overall weigth of my boat and trailer is under 2000lbs and the tongue wieght isn't too bad, as it's easy enough to pick up and move.

I don't want to put any of my toys at risk and two trailers in tandem isn't an option here.

get a roof rack for your Yugo

or a pickup bed works well.

If you really want to take that many toys, gotta have a truck or build a rack to put the ski in the boat.

Anytime you extend how far away from the truck the ball is, you greatly increase the leverage it has on the vehicle.

Well, I do have a pickup, but I prefer to tow with my Suburban, much nicer and better suited for towing.

The pickup is a standard cab and with the wife and kid, it's too cramped, especially on longer drives, which is where this will be an issue. Don't suggest throwing the ski inside the 'burb either, 'cause that ain't going to happen, especially being as the kid has to be in the middle seat.

Too bad the boat trailer isn't longer, I could just make a place on it for the ski....

make and extension off the back of the trailer behind the boat, better yet, build a hitch hauler and get a reciever mounted to the trailer!!!!!!!!!
you would have to offset it to clear the outboard, might be a tongue weight issue...............

Something like that might do the trick. If I get a tongue weight issue, I could just put some extra weight in the front of the boat to offset. I'll look into that, thanks!

no. weld up a set of bunks that rest parallel to the back of the suburban. set it up so it slides into the reciever, just like those "baskets" people have on the back of their cars/trucks whatever

on the back of the 'basket' have another reciever, and your trailer can mount right to that. itll make your trailer stick back a few extra feet, but itll be fine.

I looked online somewhere and saw something like that. Wasn't sure how good that would be with hauling a boat. I also can't see what the difference between that would be and having a bit longer trailer, except the pivot would be back a bit.

I have the same problem, let me know if you come up with something. I have a 18.5' bayliner with trailer, and would love to take my ski out at the same time as well. I have a 05 durango that we use. Putting the ski is in the truck is out of the question as well. Barely fits, and I have to haul my 2 boys around and the wife.

Why not put a receiver hitch on the front and a basket up there? Penguin has a set up like this to haul his cooler around. Shouldn't be that hard. Just hope you don't mind bugs and rock chips...

I have come upon the same situation. Although I can just throw it in the back of the truck, I have come up with another idea. The idea isn't for towing (although you could use it in your case), but actually driving the boat and the ski (together as one) to the cove. I am going to build some sort of unit that mounts to the back of the swim platform. Could that work in your case as well?

Hanging the boat hitch extended off a 'basket' will put too much torque on your reciever with just the trailer tongue weight alone. Maybe if you were talking about a little utility trailer, but with a 18ft boat forget it.

Nope, I have an outboard motor, but it is a good idea!
