I had the privledge of hangin out with Vaclav Zacek(The Iceman) from Czech rebublic yesterday at Body Beach. He speaks great english and we BS'ed for a couple hours and rode for a couple hours. Hes a real mellow, humble person(maybe why he's called Iceman?), but he's all business when it comes to freestyle. It was a great time.
Last year he was on a SJ at the World Finals. He now has a EME 800 thanks to Eric Malone hooking him up with a good deal and to be part of Erics promotion of the EME in Europe. He was also the first person to get a EME in Europe. So its all good for Vaclav and Eric. He competes on the European tours with the likes of Lee Stone, Rok Florjanic, Marc Sickerling, etc. Then the rest of the time he travels and does shows. Sounds like a great lifestyle to me!
He was on one of Erics practice Polaris Octanes that was used on that big ramp jump Malone used to do. It was more SS ported and had tons of mid and top end. He wasn't shipping his EME over but was waiting for Eric to show up here next week with a buttload of EME's(for sale and for usage at the WF). He also told me that the EME was Homoglated too now, so its official to use in the amateur class.
The freestyle era has boomed in Europe he says. For the European Championships there were 60 competitors and they spent just a whole day qualifying! Unheard of and insane!
We switched skis for awhile and he did some tricks on mine that I have never tried. He also gave me a lot of pointers and said I had some skills. It was inspiring to say the least. I really wished I had someone around here like him to ride with and push me harder and show me tricks in person, instead of the videos I watch. I get so much more out of it when its in person. There is no one around here at Havasu that does flatwater freestyle. Tons of Pro racers hangin out everywhere, but not Pro or top level Amatuer Freestylists. Hopefully that'll change someday!
Anyways, I thought I would share my experience from yesterday as I love the World Finals time and all the peeps from around the world that show up...
