the x2 mounting bracket that bolts to the hood is at an angle. the steering won't mount perpendicular to the hood more like an angle toward you. I didn't like that.

How about a setup like this. The upsides are its cheap as hell, its plastic and aluminum so no corrosion issues,it has an intergal cable holder and its easy to install, the downsides are its plastic and aluminum so it will have some slop in it eventually and it will have to use a Seadoo steering cable. The cables and wiring all route through the center of the steering tube.

Take a look at the way it is set up if nothing else,UMI made a replacement version of that setup,I have a pic here somewhere, you could easily bolt any kind of cable retaining device you wanted to to the aluminum frame, which means you could use the stock cable. The X4 hull was a very popular race boat hull, there should be a bunch of those UMI setups laying around somewhere.

Ya my 96 XP had UMI on it and I think that steering unit would work well for this conversion. Personally I wouldnt want a weak plastic/ alum tubing/cast crap on my conversion(if i was building one), just for strength purposes. Those stocker unit wear out and get loose fast. I suppose though for mock up and test fitting they would come in handy..

The XP X-4 UMIs go for around $200 for a used unit and are swept up fast too. Lots of peeps want those. I paid $200 for mine, had it for abut 7 years and sold it for the same price on Ebay when I parted it out.

i would use a superjet style streering with a spacer to mount the bars over the bolt.

i dont know where to find the rrp steering setups to show you. it wouldn't work with the 24/7 hood but would work great on the homemade hood and it would be cheap if it fails

Too late for a setup like that. I wanted something more built for the purpose I was building this boat for. :naughty:

I will look more into the UMI x4 xp setup, but then what would I do for the steering cable?

Im liking the GPR setup so far.

Keep coming with more ideas! Thanks alot fellas!

Where the steering cable attachment comes off the steering hub on the UMI it is just a flat aluminum plate ,you could bolt the superjet cable holder to it and use the stock superjet cable.

could you somehow mount a SJ steering cable bracket to the inside of the hood? fiberglass it in or rivet it on, make a plate for it to bolt to etc?

That is my plan. I can work with fiberglass, and I have a good friend who welds aluminum as a profession, so it shouldnt be a issue.

I gota talk to Cody about that GPR set-up he may have.... but right now the easiest way seems to be a UMI X2 setup....

Tim, In my situation I can mount the steering at whatever angle I want. It probably just wouldn't work good without shimming it for your h20x conversion? Correct?

I think that my conversion hood is at the pefect height (or close to) for the X2 UMI (for what I want to achieve for stem Height.... If I went for the GPR system I would need to built the mount up higher as the stem is shorter.

This thing may end up looking a little goofy with the high rise UMI X2, but this project is all about function.... I can always redesign the hood to look better after Daytona.... but its all about the bidness right now.
