and the funny thing is the government STILL makes more money off a gallon of gas then the big "evil" oil companies. Weird eh?
The taxes are just a little over that amount for the one oil corporation profits but they're quite a few more oil companies with record profits too.
For the first quarter of 2008, the average state gasoline tax is 28.6 cents per US gallon, plus 18.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per gallon.
For diesel, the average state tax is 29.2 cents per US gallon plus an additional 24.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 53.6 cents per gallon.
The United States consumed a total of 144.80 billion gallons of gasoline in 2008 and at 50 cent per gallon that comes out to 72.4 billion dollars.
Also the goverment gives tax deductions so it's not all profit.
