Gprxp go boom

Rode all day, about 3-400 feet from the ramp on our way back a fw canal, maybe 40mph cruising this thing let go. Engine had sub 50 hours on it, man the sound it made I’ll never forget hahah.

I spotted the small hole in the case under the intake right after it happened and upon tear down/inspection my buddy says “hey what’s this up on the gas tank” and grabs that chunk of crankcase off the top of the tank

Needless to say it will be interesting what it looks like when I get it out. We can’t really determine what caused the failure but the rod broke and poked those nice inspection windows.

If I had to guess I would say one of the oil pumps failed on it.
Yeah I’m not really sure. I didn’t really see signs of oil starvation on the borescope but I haven’t ruled anything out.

My theory was water intrusion initially bending the rod and it running with the bent rod and thus low compression until it did itself in. The intake was a 90° coupler with a turbo guard so basically a funnel into the sc lol

I forgot to update this

Rod bent and ran until it fatigued enough to break. I didnt find anything besides it must have ingested water at some point. New engine is in, I’m redoing a lot of other odds and ends I wasn’t happy with on the first go around but I hope to fire it up soon.

I have one here out of a 2007 GTI that looks almost identical to that , about all that was still good on this one was the head after I replace the two bent valves of course .
