Got my first ski today

Finally got a standup today. Bought an 88 kawi 550 for now, if i pick up riding fast im gonna get a sj and keep this for friends. I rode at lanier for 20 min or so just to test drive it before i bought it. Well... Stood up first try pretty much right after i started up but man, turning is hard as hell! About to head to lake jackson now and practice! although i did a bit of falling already, it sure was fun :) i just gotta get used to giving it more gas. The ski is in ok shape. The guy works at a marina with one of my dads friends so its well maintained but it could use some new turf and paint. Hood seal looks dried out but still holds.

I'd say by next week, you will be doing backflips...just know that as you may tend to be wobbly, giving it lots of gas can pretty much get you out of any situation. Just be aware of where your body is and where your weight sits on the ski, you will be doing flips in no time...(I'm not there yet, but I'm workin on it...) haha...good luck man and have fun...

Wow, i saw massive improvements as soon as i got to our lake. still need to practice turning more (left especially) but i can turn decently, stand up and ride with no problem, and jump wake a bit. Rode a while yesterday and today and i love it. already getting to the point where i want a bit more power though. also, i got alot of problems with pourposing (sp?) at moderate to high speed. it might be due to my light weight but when i lean foward it still does it a bit. yet if i crouch down a bit it rides smooth. is that the only solution?

Intake grate/ride plate will help with that. I don't know which combo is best for the 550 just search for a thread there's gotta be one. have fun dude :headbang:

All of the 550's I have ridden do that at higher speeds. To get mine to plane out and ride fast all you have to do is get low and lean back. Mine has a stock intake and ride plate.

ya i kinda discovered that today, first time i hit top speed too :) not that fast but it is fun. i did a god bit of sliding today. easier to slide right then left but im working on it.

Looks like another GA rider here! We have a little group that gets together at Lake allatoona on the weekends, and i usually drive up on wednesdays if you'd like to join!

i might come by one weekend. seemed like the drive to lanier to get the 550 took forever but its nice upthere. Had a few friends try and ride to, its so fun watching them fall over. one of these days imma buy an sj but ive only had this 550 3 days :) im already wanting the power!
