300/440/550 Got a 550 for free

So about a month ago I went to go buy a trailer form a guy in Havasu. When I got there to pick it up there was an old 550 sitting on it, I asked the guy what was up with the ski and he said I could have it with the trailer if I wanted it, but he didnt have a title for the ski. I ended up paying $300 for the trailer and got the ski as a bonus. When I got the thing home I put a battery in it and it fired right up! My question is, has anyone ever tried filing for a lost title on a ski in Arizona and how big of a pain in the ass it might be. I was also thinking that if I cant get it registered I might part it out if anyone would be interested in it.

Does it have reg numbers ? If it does you can go to Motor Vehicle and for about $10 (in NJ ) find out who the owner was. If guy who sold you treiler is owner just ask him for bill of sale and put HIN number on bill of sale. It's how it work here in Jersey

It can be a pain if the original owner is a prick. Sometimes you'll hear about them basically asking for more money for them to sign over the papers. Or they wont be reachable. But it could just be as easy as getting a signature.

In some states the DMV will tell you who the previous owner was or who the ski was last registered to...OR... if you have a friend in law enforcement they can run the hull identification numbers (HIN) and tell you. Then you can look up the previous owners phone number via free internet phonebook services. Tell the previous owner that you got the "junk" ski for free and you are just trying to rebuild it for your kid, and ask them if they could write a quick bill of sale. That way they don't think that it is worth a ton of money and act like a jerk. Have the previous owner scribble or type out a bill of sale, maybe like this...

"I, ___(previous owner's name)__, do hereby sell/give my 19xx Kawasaki Jet Ski watercraft Hull Identification Number #ABC1230987, to __(your name)__ for $__($50, parts only-non running, whatever price is fair, etc)__." Then have them print and sign their name, and date it. That should work in most states.

Remember, whatever price you put on the bill of sale you will have to pay tax and/or fees on (most states). You can also get in trouble if you lie about the price, so let you conscience be your guide. If the ski doesn't run, you can usually have the bill of sale say, 'free' or 'gift', and mention on the bill of the sale that it is not running and/or parts only. Check your local laws or call an attorney for further info. There are title companies that do all this, but they charge a lot of money.

PS: Be nice to the previous owner! They do not have to do this for you, and they hold the fate of your new vehicle in their hands. Remember, he/she may initially think that it is some type of scam when you contact them about a vehicle that they haven't even thought about for many years. -Todd

same type of deal with me but im in Vegas $20 and the woman who gave it to me signed a paper 3 weeks later i got a tittle no hassle

Dude, don't part it out without at least trying to register it. I bet it's not that bad.

Tell them it was free, there won't be hardly any tax.

An owner for it will show up in the DMV system if it's on record. Tell them you have it, and can't reach the guy. The DMV will send him a letter, and if he doesn't respond within a month, the ski gets a new title in your name. If he does reply, he will say he got rid of it, or it's stolen. If you think it's clean, then it should be fine. You have to pay some fees
as if you bought it and had the title, then you're done.
