gold plated

Maybe it's a question on the theory of doing it.

But why stop at the crank??

Is it possible to gold plate the whole engine and have it running good? Excluding the combustion chambers, of course.

Ill post a question to your gold plating question... why plate something, like a crank, with a a really soft metal like gold that will probably wear off before you even break in the motor?

take care of your equipment and you wont have anything to worry about...

Excellent point. Wouldn't anodizing work instead?

Only on the aluminum parts. Fwiw , there was a motorcycle mag back in the late 80's early 90's that did a gold plated engine. From what I remember the supposed purpose was heat dissipation. It seemed like a lot of trouble for a non-existant problem.

There are allready many coatings out on the market for which this guy is seeking. I used one of them for the exterior coating on my sj engine.

No need to build a better mouse trap.

Age is irrelvant to the original topic or any of his posts but more than evident in some of the responses regarding Bling. The question wasn't that unreasonable. Take a common problem within a subject and look for a reasonable solution, seek approval and/or support and go into business providing a service previously un thought of. Sounds like someone trying to better themselves and the sport to me.

Not every idea is viable but where would we be if people didn't ask any questions like these and look to make new products all the time? Ideas like these lead to bigger and better ideas that eventually change our world. Stop being so close minded and open yourselves to possibility.

I would image nascar uses similar coatings to F1, ceramics similar to jet-hot etc, the engines used in racing are taken to the absolute limit in terms of mechanical stress and heat....so that couple of degrees in heat dissipation can make all the difference between making it though a race, having a failure, or ease of at the end of the race due to a "soft engine"

I once spent money on jet-hot coating stainless headers for a daily driven vehicle....biggest waste of money in my life.....

not to threadjack,

but I allways thought it would be a good idea to put a drain-plug in the bottom of cases (this would be really easy with the billet cases).....it would be super easy to drain in case of water injestion....

I can think of a lot of times when I wasnt sure if my motor had taken in water, and it would have been a lot easier to just unthread a drain plug and check, than to go though the motions of draining....

not to mention there is a lot less chance of compressing some water/bending a rod/breaking reeds in the process

Kawi motors used to have this. I always see people recommending to block these case drains, as they can leak over time.

I'm not positive but doesn't the oil coat the internals of the engine and prevent corrosion short term and for long term storage fogging oil is used. With gold plating you would still need lubrication so you would not be saving yourself anything.

don't just tell people they have stupid ideas just tell them why its not necessary.

Actually im 24 i have a BS in construction engineering ive been in the marine corps for 6 years ive done 3 deployments to iraq and one to afghanistan with FORCE RECON im now working on my law degree at USD in san diego. I know you think your hot sh*t cause you can be cool on an internet sight and rip up an idea that somebody proposed. Its cool I dont mind cause its clear some of you are hill billys who just take what is GIVEN and never attept to propose a new idea or think outside a box or the small single wide trailer you live in
