Pretty much what AQUA said, gelcoat can be thinned and sprayed with acetone or styrene or even lacquer thinner,it usually leaves a rough finish that must be sanded and buffed to get a nice glossy finish. It can only be thinned about twenty percent and it has to be catalyzed with MEK to make it harden.Even with the MEK added it will not surface harden in the presence of air .It must be either sprayed into a mold or surface can be sprayed and coated with poly vinyl alcohol to aid in curing, wax can also be added to the gelcoat to make it cure or PATCHAID can be added to make it cure as well. There are several new additives out on the market which increase the flow out of gelcoat and make it easier to deal with. One is called smoothie and it is added directly to the gelcoat, the other is called Duratec clear and it is mixed 50/50 with the final coat of gelcoat and sprayed.I have had very good success with the duratec clear and recommend it on any larger repairs,it saves a lot of sanding and buffing time.
