gel coat glitter paint

From what I remember, it's a lot of work in spraying the different stages. When I used to work at a local car dealership (about 12 or 13 years ago), one of the guys in the body shop was repainting a boat of his with this type of stuff. From what I remember, it was about a 5 stage process, or at least the effect he was going for took about 5 stages. First he laid down a dark base colour. After that he laid down the first colour of the metal fleck paint. After that he sprayed again with a lighter coloured transulcent version of the first base layer. The fourth layer was a different coloured metal fleck again. After all this, he sprayed a few layers of clear coat.

I guess it depends how much depth you want to create in the paint/gelcoat. The more depth you want, the more layers you'd have to put down.

If you want to go super easy but lowest quality, you can do the metal flake stuff from duplicolor. No idea how it looks or feels but it's an option.

US composites has glitter flake that is designed to be added to gel coat. Worth looking into if you're really interested in doing that.

The last thing I can throw at this is a Firemist paint from tcpglobal. The one below is cobalt firemist and it's actually a single stage paint. It's held up great on both my ski and jeep. The one downside is that a single stage will be harder to maintain that brilliant luster/show room finish. Then again it's a ski...

The flake as it is called is sprayed on in clear gelcoat, here is the problem, all the flakes tend to settle on the bottom of the cup and its hard to get the pattern to come out right, they make a spray cup with an agitator in it but those a really hard to come by nowadays, some guys have been known to lay down the clear and blow the flakes onto the clear with an air nozzle, there are many ways to do it and few ways to do it and make it look right.
