FX-1 FX1 porpoising

What helps the fx1 from porpoising at any more than 1/2 throttle? My only mods are Pro-tec rideplate and intake grate, and a shortened plate w/0 degree bars. Kawi 650 pump and Factory-Pipe are sittin on the shelf waiting for winter. I just payed way too much for a Jet-Dynamics rideplate (guess where I got it) and it doesn't fit as good as the pro-tec. The side need some grinding to fit. I will send it back if its not worth the hassle.

Try putting some spacers on the 2 outside bolts to the ride plate.l run the same JD plate.Because of my weight 170,my fx porpoises. But l keep putting washers on mine till it quit.Kind of an old school trick.Take several with you the next time you ride and experiment!

Is there any plate thats is better than the rest? If the JD is not an improvement over the pro-tec, I'll return it. I ran a JD rideplate and intake grate on my 750sx and it was a HUGE difference over the R&D. ( less porpoising and handled better ) Does the pump swap help any? thanks for your replys

It really shouldn't porpose with any decent plate. No offense, but it's mostly rider induced. unless your plate is damaged, it should be able to be controlled by rider position/style.

I'm 5'7" and 160lbs. No matter where/how I stand, it still does it. I guess I just need more time on this ski. I've been riding for a while but the fx1 is new to me this year.

l'm gonna say you are correct 90% of the time.l had a riva groovy on my fx when l first got it(sucked),then bought a protec,it porpoised like crazy, then bought a JD plate, still did the same thing.Did not matter where l rode in the tray.So l used the same spacer trick l did on some old 550's.No more issues.l think that certain riders according to weight have the problem that bigford is having.l run a D cut half the time now without spacers, cut flush with the azz end of the ski.And no porpoising,so l wonder that the length has something to do with the hop?

As a side note,l paid the big price for the JD plate and it looked like that just made it and shipped it.No finish work what so ever!

I'm running the Shredmaster. It seems to help, but i'm so new to this I really don't know the difference. I think i'll get a second plate next season and D-cut it just to get a different feel.

It takes some time on a fx. About the only time I have porpoising is when im running hard across the lake, im thinkin about d cutting my plate and trimming down to see if it helps much. Diftmasters pole is shortened at -5 1/2", mines at -3" and his is much more planted than mine. Its the only thing I miss about the sn, chasing the wakes.

Ready to ride
Last week I was out with a bunch of people, I was on a boat and a friend of mine was on my FX-1 and he was bouncing enough to make me crazy just watching. We stoped and had a chance to talk I told him to get more weight on his front foot , it sounds stupid but later at the dock he said after we stopped it rode like a dream.

This is with a modified stock plate with 1 washer under each rear bolt.

Also the JD plate wont work without modifications with the 140 pump, I tried.

Most of the times porposing is the rider's fault. I have a D cut now and have no problem with porposing. Having shortened steering makes it easier to ride properly as well

I just dcut my plate the other night and notched out for my down trim. The down trim is awesome. With the nozzle down as far as it will go I can fly down the lake at full throttle and catch the wakes like I used to do on the sn. I still have a lot of pop outta the water but such a more settled ride. Its just what ive been looking for. No more riding the horse. If I get the notion to ride nose high I just stop and adjust my trim up. Its like having your cake and eating it tooo.

I have ran a R&D with stock pump /stock impeller. JD with stock pump w/skat impeller w/kick . . this combination was night and day difference. Then went to 144 pump and used a Protec with part of the webbing removed (required for larger pump) . . solid rocket. I ride with most of my weight on my right foot, which is forward all the way in the tray. . . but I am a goofy foot skier as well. I ran two brass washers under each the rear bolts of all the above plates. Best of luck in dialing your boat in for your riding style. .. all part of the fun.
