FX-1 Fx1 carb issues

Use turf for the rails, or better yet use rhyno lining.

If you plan to do freestyle DO NOT USE RHYNO LINING! When you try to stand on the rails your feet will slide off causing elephantitus of the nuts.

The 2 small clear diaphragms on either side of the block on the fuel pump side of your carbureter are the fuel pump check valves. Usually when they fail they get a crease in them in the shape of a "v". If yours has a tear in it, then your engine will starve for fuel. Are one of these the one with a tear in it?

Yes its one on those diaphrams. The first time I looked at it it wasn't as bad as it is now. It has 3 v creases like you said. One of the v creases has a small tear close to the edge of the diaphram. Will this cause the problem Ive described? Its a lean condition, it pops and backfires. I took my waterbox out and examined it, it looks good. I still havent swapped the carb off my sj, but I will soon. I tried to upload a pic of the diaphram, but it keeps failing:smashfreakB:.

just to clarify..that was my sons sj. i sold it, kept the cash and ran out and bought a new 08!!!

and yes one of the good things about being the old dude is it's paid for.

Nice ski:love:. Did you paint your trim white? Mine was all purple. I see your fire ext comp is white as well. If you painted it tell me what you used, im gonna keep my fire ex comp so I would like it white instead of purple.

Thanks bro!

yes as to painted it white.....with outdoor white plastic paint....3 coats does grest....BUT it will scratch right off.....so u have to touch it up often....which is cool with me...as long as its not purple.....
and turffin the outer sides of the ski looks great....thats next for me.....i NEED a pipe also.....anyone??

Yes it will cause a lean condition. Get yourself a Genuine Mikuni carbureter kit. Make sure the kit you are getting is for the square body Mikuni SBN carbureter. The BN carbureter is a round body, much older and doesn't even have the check valves that you need. Do yourself a favor and replace everything in the carb. When you are replacing the rubber gasket on the fuel pump side of the carb, pay attention to the size of the triangle shaped hole. On your carb it should be the smaller of the two that come in the kit. The paper gasket that is stuck to the fuel pump cover is a pain to get off so take your time. DO NOT USE A CARBURETER DIP TO CLEAN THE CARBURETER. This is direct from Mikuni. The dip will eat away the protective paint on the carbureter and parts. The paint is there to prohibit corrosion. To replace the fuel pump check valves use a very small ball end instrument or ball end allen wrench to gently push the rubber through the plate. Be careful, too much pressure and you will push a hole through the rubber. I use wd40 or something like it to lube the rubber with and also use a slow circular motion to insert it into the plate.

Good luck, it really isn't that difficult to do. You just need to pay attention to a few things. Make sure to put the correct replacement spring in when you replace it. For the FX1 it should be the gold. Also, on the needle arm, it is an adjustable piece of the carbureter. Make sure that when it is installed that it sits flush with the metering block. It may be bent to achieve this. You don't want it to be more than 1mm above or below flush. When you replace the o-rings on the high and low speed adjuster screws have a pen and paper at hand. Carefully screw each in until seated lightly counting the exact number of turns and record each. Then you can remove them and replace the o-rings and lightly seat them and then back them out the number of turns you recorded.

hey guys, just read through this thread and cant actually find what teh stock set up is?

if anyone knows id like to know

pilot and main size
needle size and spring
if possible how many turns on the high and low

thanks in advance

too my project fx1 out today, shes running good but i think the carb needs dialing in.. be great to have a starting point

i dont know what stock is but my stock ski run well with a 120 pilot and a 138 main (I think). I know my ski wouldnt run worth a crap with the 115 pilot that it come with so I went to a 120, it run great till my lower rod bearing come apart. Needle and spring were stock. The crinkled clear metering disc was my prob with this carb.

Stock Set up:
Pilot: 115
Main:135
N/S: 1.5
Spring: Gold, 50 to 55 on the pop off.
Start with 2 turns out on high and low.

If you ski is stock port work it will not run right if ur pop off is not around 50. I put a pipe, head, cdi, grate, and prop. All that was changed on carb was the main jet to 145. My ski is on hit and I have ran 25gl's of fuel with this set up.. I did try other combo's jet and pop off but went back to stock set up other than 145 main.

Great info shawn. I havent modded my motor yet but I will keep this in mind when I have to rejet. Well I take that back, I have done alittle porting but I have yet to get my cylinders bored since my motor took a dump on me. I also picked up a westcoast head that im going to throw on. You still riding?? Its cold up here!!

Just passing on the knowledge its the least I could seeing how much I have got from here. Yeah your porting looked nice and clean. Hope mine turns out that nice when I do it this winter along with the 144 pump.
Hell yeah still riding the water temp is around 75. I will be riding for a while. Long as the sun is shining and a wet suit its not bad but when has the sun been shining, not much. I feel ripped off this year from the sun. Your only a 100 miles the way the crow fly's but it is much colder in the mountains and at a spring feed lake.

Yeah its about 10 degrees colder up here. I need a wetsuit, or better yet diapers my boy is gonna be here Thursday :baby::arms:. Looks like im gonna be busy for a while.

Oh your porting will turn out fine, that was my first attempt and im no pro by any means. That matt e home porting thread helped alot.

Some say you cant polish turds but ive been trying to. Ive pretty much the same porting to a 6m6 650 for that js hull. I think its gonna spin that little 550 pump nicely. On the ex port I have got it to about 65-66% of the bore which is around 3.5mm wider on each side, those 6m6 ports start out tiny. But the 6m6 has a lower ex port height than a 701, close to 1mm, which should make a nice hit off bottom.

Shawn, if you need any help on your winter projects lmk. Maybe you can teach me how to ride next season, lol. Or teach me how to break stuff:poke::laugh2:.
