On my SJ i seem to be getting a fair amount of fuel mist coming out of my tank. After an hour or so of riding I will pull the hood, and there will be an oily residue in the same area as the vent. Does this mean my vent is bad? What are the symptoms of a bad check valve?

probably not normal. Mine does the same thing i have noticed. just one more little thing to replace this winter.

Not normal for them to leak. Check it and replace it if you can blow through it both ways.
What are they called? One way valve? If so I can probably pick one up at NAPA tomorrow.

I can't think of any reason it would cause running issues. It will probably allow more fumes in the engine compt. though and that probably isn't the best thing.

Try motorcycle/motocross shops for a cheap tank vent, most carry them on a pegboard display and should be under $10. I always have some on hand.

Thanks Chuck! I got a 1/8 vacuum check valve from napa yesterday. It is 1/8 on the one side and smaller on the other side. I think it should work ok for at least one weekend. I will be ordering the correct one from somewhere next week. I don't know who carries them.

yea, i was going to say get the little gas cap vent some ppl use on mx bikes and quads...you should be able to find them at any dealer! i would definitely do it asap so that the fumes don't fill up inside - any little spark:thumbsdown:
