Other Fuel Questions and Discussion

Running higher compression is a bummer when buying fuel. That's what got me to start this thread.

So what do you guys know and like, that really works well, and how does it compare in price vs performance?

Why do you run what you run? Budget, no budget.. I'm needing to learn about fuels and high compression. Possibly also domes that are being cut for pump gas, or race gas and why. I just want to learn as much as I can.

Thanks fellas!

Well....here's what I have done for a few years now.
I ran 200 psi on my 760 motor and used a mixture of 3:2 AvGas 100LL to 92 octane pump gas. Right about 96 octane. It's really only a "cheap" way of running higher compression because AvGas has a lower energy content than even pump gas.
At current prices (5.99 for 100LL and 4.30ish for 92), that works out to about 5.31/gal
I ran the same mix on my 1000 ADA motor with 185 psi (bigger bore = higher octane requirement)

I am strongly considering going to a 1:1 mix of MS109 or CHP with pump gas. MS109 is 15.60/gal and CHP is 15.33/gal
Price for that works out to $9.95/gal for MS109 mix and 9.82/gal for CHP mix.
It would allow me to run considerably higher compression and because it's oxygenated fuel, I'd get quite a jump in power.

So it would be almost twice the cost, but it may be worth it. Maybe I can work those prices down a bit by getting dealer pricing.

Unless you are competing or have a lot of excess money to blow I would say don't bother. Just squeeze all you can out of pump gas and then you can afford more tanks of gas to practice riding better.

I wish e85 was a possibility. There's some 5 min away from me. All kinds of car guys get that stuff here. Ferrari club from Reno comes down for it a lot. And a lot of semi local high boost / compression people too. But as read earlier the consumption is ridiculous? Among other issues as well. I need to try and find some oxygenated stuff around here later on and try it out. Curiosity is killin me.

"Economical" and "horsepower" just don't exist in the same sentence. Sucks... Just sayin.

Give Harry at group k a call. He answered all of my fuel questions for my ski. I ended up just sticking with 91 in the ski. But I had them do my dirtbike so it would run 100LL or regular 100 octane. I'm lucky because in Vegas it's very common to find 100 octane at the pump. One other thing I would worry about with race fuel and e85 is how well it will mix with your oil. I was originally going to run castor927 but if you look on the back of the bottle it is very picky when it comes to mixing with fuel (even temperature can be an issue). So be aware of that.

There were a couple BOBs at the lake about a month ago. Both running about the same engine set-up. Both 771s I believe, one was running av gas and the other running 91 pump gas, they both seemed to be running about the same to me. I am not into large engine as of now so I don't really understand the difference. I have always run 91 in my engines just to be on the safe side.

Great thread, hopefully I'll learn a few things.

Matt_E, I cannot imagine paying 10 bucks a gallon for gas and still being able to ride all day.

VP-CHP fuel is the best performing fuel that Iv'e found. It's like adding total loss or a B pipe! (When properly set up for oxy fuel).
If I can't afford CHP, I'll not ride. It's that big of a difference!!!

Been running my engine at 160~ psi the entire season. Switching domes soon to 185~. See what changes. Derrick set me up with the lower compression to start off.

I was considering going to av-gas, but after reading around, I think pump is for me.
