Freeride gathering questions

Would people show up if there were no sponsors? If there are sponsors how do we go about getting them? The problem being is where we launch from is a boat launch and we only hang out there to take a break. What i'm trying to say is that if people brought their families to watch, there wouldn't be much watching to do. But riding, there is a ton of. The place where we ride every weekend is very cool with ALOT of wake jumping and a place where we can see alot of girls and big expensive boats. There is alot of flat water in a small section, shallow water all the way to lake/river riding with the occasional freighter and plenty of HUGE boats and deep enough to do anything. We launch from an island and ride the channels around it. Plenty of something for everyone. :brap: This would be on Lake Saint Clair. Harsens Island if someone wants to look it up. Any info on anything would be great. :barrel:

Plan a date & tell people to show up. It's all about the riding & gathering with people who like to ride. It doesn't have to be a big production for people to have a good time. Smaller rides without all of the raffles, sponsors, etc can be just as successful with out all of the hassles & stress of trying to organize something. Most of the big freerides have started small & grown. So I say go for it:arms:

FreeStyleFest is like that, it's a ride first and foremost, the riding area is about a mile from the ramp, there is no access other than by water, etc. Heck, a 'freeride event' could be 5 people getting together.

dude we just had almost 40 skis and not one sponsor for the ozarks jetski invasion. it was awesome.

that's how daytona started. the surf sluts would pic a place on the east coast and they would show up. then more people and then people from out of town or another state or country. now it's huge. actually the hugeness of it isn't that great. I'm glad it's only big once a year. the best rides are the small ones with no sponsors or crowded water.

amen to that! this past sun was one of the best days riding i've had since all you guys came up and there was only abot 8-10 of us

Great idea Matt. My thoughts on this topic, to pull off a successful ride, would be location. Yes, the Browns launch and the surrounding water is excellent for jet skiing, although, I feel the travel to get to Harsens Island may be a bit complicated for some, with the ferry, and the small launch sitting in the marsh, not the greatest for spectators.
The DNR launch on M-29 in Fair Haven would be more suitable for such an event with easy accessiblity, and would be more publicized. All of the riding; flat water, wave/wake jumping, hot boats, the channels, etc are available from there also. Launch is larger, paved and have party stores and gas stations close by.
That's my angle on it. I'll be there, where ever it's at. :biggthumpup:

Freerides are not about sponsors, freerides are about riding and partying w/ friends you don't get to see every weekend... It's a time to push the envelope and show off a little too... In the case of Daytona, sponsors were only added after it was decided to make the event a charity event. I would not even worry about sponsors for an event like you are speaking of. You need to put out feelers and see who will REALLY show up and make sure when people are there that they are taken care of and they want to come back... When you have establshed a core group then worry about sponsors... Remember, they need to see a return on their investment, so getting a bunch of sponsors to donate stuff then not having a good turnout will make for a tough road ahead... Start slow and don't try to shoot for the moon the first time out. I have been doing Freerides for 4 years now and it takes time to develope a good plan and follow through w/ it successfully.....

Good luck, it's tough, but rewarding to pull off....

That's cool. I was really just wanting a ride together. The sponsors would be alot of time/effort that I wasnt really looking forward to for the first time like you said. I believe we'd have alot of locals turn out for this event and even some others from the west side of the state and maybe canada. Well I guess I will start getting some suggestions from everyone. Thanks for the info everyone!

theres no beach or grass area to stop and have a break or for family to watch.Would launching at deckers be a problem?

deckers has no place to sit and watch either! The north channel is all right there and its slow no wake. The DNR launch at the end goes out to the north channel or the bay, and the bay isnt close enough to watch people ride. Getting people together at harsens isnt a bad idea because you have The middle channel, muscamoot, and the st clair cutoff. A little bit of everything for everyone.

Yea, it's not that much of a problem, it's for a great time though! Well worth it!

ok, the ferry ride takes a whopping 2 minutes. its not bad at all, and in the summer they at least have 2 running, more often than not, 3.
