foothold-shortened pole question

if want to force yourself to lean forward more when riding just loosen your throttle and angle it down a little more it will force you to get up on it more wihtout you thinking about it

Lets face it, footholds real purpose is for back-flips and in those situations you need to be locked in and feet all the way back. When jumping waves (surf) I keep my left foot forward. For jumping I don't need my left foot locked-in (or right foot for that matter). However, when riding aggressive in chop or when I'll clear double or tripple sets, I always prefer to lock my left foot in under the fire extinguisher container and use it as leverage.

Red section not true for all. Some / most people do not ride surf stance. IMO Foot Holds are for everything, STABS, ROLLS, NO HANDERS and on & on. For surf stance you would need foot straps.
True is the exhaust tube gets in way of moving them forward. But IMO its all about form, set up and when you apply the throttle that causes the nose to come up in a jump. If you want the nose down, simply let off throttle just before the waves base then grab BRAPP up the face and use body english in the air. 185# on a 300# SJ gives you plenty of leverage to control the boat in the air. My sons foot holds are as far forward as poss. w/ the exhaust tube still in tact (in fact I had to dent the exhaust tube some) and I can ride his just the same as mine that are installed further back. I have a -1 pole and he has a standard.
I will have a -2 pole and -2.5 X-Metal bars for this next season, for rolls only.

Tom,

In regards on how much to shorten the pole it depends on what steering you are going to run.

Currently you know I am running the Wamiltons Shortened Turn Plate with 0Deg bars which is good for about -2in.

I plan on taking off about -2 to -3 in off the pole for about a total of -4 to -5. Sorry I know you can subtract.

Now being that I have the ability to use straight bars and I just picked up a new set of straight bars for $15:biggrin:(Thanks NJFL) if that -4 to -5 isn't short enough I can always throw the straight bars on there for another -.5 to -1 in.

Now in your case you need to decide what you are going to do about your steering. You know that you can modify a stock turnplate to accept straight bars and shorten it to about -3in.

If I were you I would take off -2 to about -3 for now and if thats still not short enough make up for it with modifying your steering.

put your holds all the way in the back, thats where you have the most torque or leverage on the ski. if youre that sketched out about shortening your pole, then do it inch my inch.

-3 is what I figured, and I ain't skeered! just needed to know if it was my skill or where I stand. starting to look like skill. keep em coming 8 days til I do it to it.

Ok this is my last post untill you install the footholds.... Where are all of the other surf riders footholds? And how far have they moved their bars foreward?

It is like the saying "Eat your honey, a million bears couldn't be wrong" :haha:

That is what I am going with on my new ski. My steering will be -4 inch pole -2 inch turnplate. And my footholds are in the back.

Bahaha..... Tall ... I have been called quite a few things but NEVER tall....Hell I can't even ride all the rides at sixflags.. well I can but I have to bribe the chicks working the gate

DAMN I can't be trusted... another post

NO really I am only 5'7"

Just buy a Rick Roy Pole and never question your length again, although 3 pounds heavier than stock(freestyle concern). Totally adjustable, and a real work of art. I gave my UMI away...
