Foothold Install issues

Im sure someone will be able to give me some advice. Im installing Watercraft Factory holds into my Kawasaki 650sx. Ive got it all cut out and removed the foam all the way to the inside wall of the outside. Yet still the top edge of the binding is not meeting the surface like it seems it should.

Any ideas on what to do? The foam on the bottom is level with the tray, just thought of maybe lowering that and to angle the binding to make it work?

pre drill your holes in the footholds and the hull, apply your glue (5200 or epoxy), then screw the footholds in, start on the bottom corner and work your way up and around, they will pull up tight.

When I do footholds, I like to remove all the foam in the gunwhales and then re-foam it when complete. Adds more strength to the holds. And they can bend some when putting the screws or rivets in. Seems like your still hitting something preventing it from going all the way in up top. If not just start bottom and work up.

It's common with the WCF holds to do that by my ear. Just do whats been said, screw in the bottom, and force the top in.

Here's what I would do:
glue them in with the bottom level, let that setup, then grind/glass the rest so it's fairly round and looks like part of the ski.

those holds are made for SJ's but theyll work with your 650. do as everyone is saying, but then after its 5200'ed and riveted, feather out what ever ridge you have thats flying above the curve and then lay your glass over it.

dont forget to lay biaxial from one hold all the way across the tray and into the other hold.

the foothold, itself, is just a 'shape' to go by. the glass and foam is where it gets its strength.

some parts have been known to disintegrate with improper installation.

Ok Im going with screws only because I have no idea how to rivet or how that would work.

I dont think if I screwed the bottoms down, I dont see the top being all that bendable. I like the idea of glassing the top and just smoothing it in.

I have a yard of biaxial clotch and going to prolly put to layers between the footholds and then thinking about just laying it through out the whole tray. Worth it or should I just save it?

Can I just mix up a batch of epoxy and resin, adding in some thickener agent to use as the glue?

you can use a thicker in the epoxy instead of 5200, no problem.

it wont hurt to reinforce the entire tray, but to compensate for the material you removed, id go across the tray about 2" in front of and in back of the holds and up into the corners a bit as well.

OK thats no problem with me. I ordered more clotch than I thought. 1yd of biaxial is more than I thought. 3yd of regualr cloth is a whole lot of it.

Also I should predrill holes in the holds and tray than screw it down?

I always grind and shape things untill they fit flush. I might be putting more effort into it than needed but if your going to lay glass over the edges to make things stronger then you might as well grind the odd shaped out of it and make it smooth. Then the glass will strengthen it back up and there is no extra thick places all is smooth and one uniform layer.

I would predrill the foothold so that the screw doesn't tighten into the foothold but I don't drill holes in the tray they can cut their own hole.

Thats how the WCF footholds look like after rivetting and glassing in.

Jura,

That tray looks Sano.... What did you use to finish it with?

2 comp. epoxy resin and polyester mats. After grinding I painted it with custom made black epoxy resin.
Thanks for the compliments.
I have a lot of pictures from the start till turfing but I don't wanne hijack the guys thread.

screws will work fine and if you are going to glass over it then the screws or rivets are no use anyhow. but if you must rivet them in you can buy a cheap rivet gun at walmart or lowes and the kit should have rivets included.

I think i see a few spots where you might have been able to put some more rivets:bigeyes:

i agree there should be no gap between rivets in fact you could stack rivets on rivets
