Other than severely over-paying for a resin you can get for much cheaper elsewhere.

the only stuff ive found to be similar is the fiberglass hawaii brand..its almost identical..the uscomposites is not the same stuff

Other stuff will work just as good........for a lot less

And there is not much difference in this stuff....at least as far as jet skis go.....air planes are another story

Its not cutting any corners......its buying smart......If it is the same stuff and it will work the same...all for less money, why not?

Well I had a nice talk with the owner of fiberlay...and according to him there is no difference in the resin itself (there are only three companies in the world who make the stuff). The difference in the stuff is in the hardner...and as far as skis go it just doesnt matter. If you are building air planes or something like that then you would want to make sure you have the best stuff. This goes for the epoxy stuff....not sure it is the same for polyester.

This is just skis......no need to over think it.....

Don't know about mixing it. I do know that resin quality makes very little difference for what we do.

I was sitting at the same table with Phill & Mr Fiberlay when this conversation took place.

There is no way I'll pay for that overpriced West Systems bull********. They don't even make it, they just repackage & resell.

I buy bulk (3 gallons) with nice clear hardener for 130 shipped, and let me tell you: There is absolutely no difference to West Systems.
I have used WS resin before, btw.

So I really don't consider this cutting corners. My "cheap" resin has held up extremely well for over a year now, with no signs of letting up.
And how often have you seen or heard of reinforcement breaking because of poor resin? :dunno:

I am willing to bet a cup of resin that's poor workmanship/poor prep 100% of the time.

BTW: Ask me how I know about poor workmanship/poor prep.

I have used West & MVS. The MVS was tinted but both worked very well. MVS was much cheaper than west.

A while ago I read there is only 3 manufacturs of resin in North America.
Dow Chemical was 1, and the other 2 I can't recall.

Bottom line is West Systems resin is identical to another brand that sells for much less. What that brand is? I don't know.

your local West Marine store has everything you need for foothold instal
1 yard of 1.5oz chop matte fiberglass
1 quart of epoxy resin and one pint of 205 hardener any brand but West Systems is most common
1 container of West Systems 404 fillier
25 - 1/2" to 3/4" #6 counter sunk screws (STAINLESS) Lowes has them
1 quart acetone avail @ Lowes
69 cent cheap 2" paint brushes prolly 4 to be safe Lowes
Stiring stick, free at Lowes

remove turf
mark out pattern for area holds will be installed
Cut that area out and remove foam until hold fits in hole
scuff area aprox 3" around outside of foot hold edges on boat and scuff holds on edges to be glued or glassed.
Dry fit holds and drill small guide holes aprox 4" apart into hold and ski while holding the hold in its place, dry screw down to make sure you have screws in right places to hold the foot hold against the glue and boat.
Remove the screws and hold and acetone the area being glues
Mix epoxy usually 4 pats to one but read the can. Then mix 404 filler in about a tablespoon full at a time until a peanut butter consistancy
Spread glue on all edges of hold liberally
hold the foot hold in place lining up your screw holes and screw it down.
Next day
grind off excess glue and scuff area a little more the acetone clean
cut strips of chop matte to width need to overlap hold onto ski minimum 2" onto ea. lay them out on cardbord once you have planned where they will go and trimmed somewhat
mix epoxy again w/ no filler this time
wet the strips out thoroughly front and back and lay them where they go tapping them straight down until all air voids are gone.

Dont mix more the 12oz of epoxy at a time or it will set up while potted.

once this all sets up you can drill holes and refoam if you feel you removed too much, I never need to as I take time to remove only what I need to remove.

Ther U go bro
