straps are definatly less expensive and easier to install. but i hear that footholds are better for flat water, because they dont take up much tray space.

I wouldn't say just flat water. I move around the tray in surf SO much....I don't want straps in the way.

Another viewpoint.

I have one strap in front on my surf boat and it has given me much better control doing re-entries and surf riding than just the foot holds in the back. In fact I may try front and rear straps on the next boat, with the footholds. If I can get used to it I will ditch the footholds and just run straps. They help you pull the noes up and "feel" the boat better. Being stuck in the back of the tray in the surf is no way to surfride.

If most of your riding is in a lake then footwells are the way to go. Its simply easier to throw the boat around with your feet side by side and spread as far apart as possible. For surfriding the straps allow for a surf stance and are waaayyy more comfortable then footholds because straps distribute the pressure accross your foot evenly, where as a with a foothold you are likely to have a pressure point

I suppose it would be good if straps were eassily removable so you
could use or not depending on the situation. Threaded inserts, etc.
Is that how they are generally installed?

werd up...

just make sure you use S.S.

couple strap tips:
1. add a piece of kydex into the strap itself to keep the strap from falling down and making it difficult to ge thte foot in... It has helped me tons.... no fiddling w/ getting my foot in there anymore, just slide it right in.

2. don't let your foot slide in the strap too far, or you run the risk of getting it caught... Joe K. told me to keep it tight so the toes and knuckes of your toes are the only part in the strap... don't worry, it's enough to grab tight

Just to add one more element to the mix...

The front foothold. AWSOME!! you can put your foot anywhere in the tray, and unlike the strap, you have full movement across the front of the tray. This helps a lot with re-entries. I do rolls surf stance with just my front foot under the hold, don't even need the back foot in. It takes a little getting used to but works really well.

That is a good idea. I think I saw a front hold on Highrollers ski. LBE, where did you pick that up from? I might do that myself since I tend to keep my left foot that far forward while surf riding and during re-entries anyway.
