is the flywheel nut left or right handed threads? i tried to remove my flywheel this evening. had the coupler held in a vice and used a long handled ratchet with a extender bar...all i got was the coupler unthreading from the drive shaft. am i turning the wrong direction? facing flywheel i'm turning nut left.

well......... you are gonna have to loosen the bolt first (righty tighty lefty loosey) then you have to use a flywheel puller, tightening down on the center (crank) and the flywheel pops off. i normally leave the bolt in the crank a few turns out as to not damage the end of the crank with the flywheel puller.... btw those things can be a biotch and may take heat and a hammer to persuade to come off. search and there are plenty of threads abt it. you might have been aware of these things but idk i just figured i would tell you anyway

and just put a bungy in the cylinder or a rag in the exhaust port instead of clamping the coupler

im sorry, a bungee cord... like you use to strap things down with (elastic) just cut one end off and turn the piston so it is close to the top, then run the cord through the spark plug hole and rotate the piston to the top... it will keep the motor from turning, once you break the bolt then you will have to turn the piston again in opposite direction so you can now tighten on the puller.
