flatwater rolls?

been out riding over the weekend and got out this afternoon for the first rides this year so i decided to work on some flatwater rolls im getting about 3/4 way around but am having a hard time putting the pole down to the hood. do you guys literally have the pole on the hood when you do your rolls?

You dont have to, but it helps when your learning them. When you put the pole down to the hood it make your center of gravity lower thus making the rotation faster
 
it feels like im retarded because for some reason i cant make the pole hit the hood, but if i had a better setup wake then things might be different

pole gets close to (or hits) the hood right at takeoff from the setup wake- Patrick Bogart is best at this- find some vids of him
 
also ant burgess does this, he is teaching me to roll and he says its really important, i almost rode out clean this weekend:)
