Flatwater pole and bar questions.

I'm a newb, but am having a ton of fun learning tricks. But I have noticed my pole set-up is too long. (watch it suzi)

Current steering set-up is a RN w/ umi -2", blowsion turn plate and 90 deg bent bars. It measures 37" from pole bracket bolt to center of steering plate pivot bolt. And 41" from pole bracket bolt to center of grips. I'm 5'8" and weigh 155ish.

I feel I need to be way more forward to land a nice stab, but the pole and bars seem to be too long. Am I right on this? Cuz it's a b!tch to ride away from one with it the way it is.

So I am wondering what lengths and set-ups some flatwater guys are running? Pros and cons of set-ups.

Thanks guys!

Jay

I'm running minus alot, not quite sure how short, from my bracket bolt to steering pivot is 30", and my steering is minus 4, and the handlepole braket is moved forward 4", but the same time my footholder is 3" moved forward, so I'm not really sure how short my set up is

i got the new style xmetal pole, and steering setup on my sj and it was nice i had the pole all the way in and the -3.5 turn plate.. so like umm 8.5 total.. but on my fx it should be pretty close to lucas.. i think it will be -12..

Thanks guys. That already helps a lot.

I like the xmetal set up the most so far. Just need to save some coin, but i'm not too far off, so that's cool. I might grab the adjustable steering system now and get the pole next. I'd sell my set-up first, but I don't have a backup to ride with dammit!

How are you guys measuring your tray set-ups. Front of hold to front of tray? I dunno. I may redo mine again this winter, but not sure.

And another question... Sorry guys. How long are you setting your limiting straps? Or does that depend on tricks?

Thanks again fellas.

Just shorten and reinforce your stock rn pole bro. You will love it and its CHEAP. Your foot hold distance depends on your hieght and arm length and riding style. Just get the pole where you want it then get in the tray and feel it out. The limitting rope needs to stop the pole about a half inch or so before the bracket stops it (depending on the elasticity of the rope).

If you want details on how to shorten and reinforce your stock pole then PM me. Trust me you will be glad you did and it will be plenty strong.

I'm about your size. 5' 9" 150 lbs. I chopped 3.5 inches off the bottom of my pole and 1.5 inches off the top so -5 total. The the 4* bars and lowered bracket give the effect of a shorter pole as well. I'm very happy with it on flat water and it's not horrible in the surf either.

My ski rides fairly nose-high so that brings the pole a little closer and I tend to ride surf stance even on flat water except for when I go to do a trick so it's not too bad on the back. I did move my footholds an inch further forward this winter a nd I'm happy with it. I might go another -1 with a turnplate but I wouldn't go any shorter than that.

I unsure of this myself. I'm 6'1" and 180. It's been so long since I rode I have forgotten allot. Oh well, I'm doing the Hazard bracket and thinking of going -4 or -5 and a shortend turnplate. My SN pole was so long it was hard doing subs, then you get pissed and do a suicide sub by accedent.
I think I'll go -5.

Make that -6.

I'm going to try a buddies -4 or -4.5 (not sure exactly) ac pole with a -3.5 plate and see how it feels. Then I might just have my umi cut and welded. Maybe... Not sure yet, just a thought. But my holds are a bit far back, so I may have another winter project there. Plus I need to refoam dammit.

Thanks a ton for all your input here. It helps tremendously.

What i've done rather than hacking up my pole was flipped the bars thus making it a -6 setup. Has anyone else done this quick mod?

*Note: you must also change the orientation of the bar clamps using two of the original holes but then also ADD a bottom plate to the bottom to clamp down
