Flat Water BR Clues?

Wildman, Glen pointed out Ratti's vid and it is an excellent example of how to roll. As you can see in the vid, Ratti stays over the hood with the pole in a very low position which enables him to have a lot of input on the movement of the ski. In effect he moves, the ski moves - they are one. Ideally if you can make the Lanier ride you could ask PDiddy, Bogie, Stoyer, or Ratti for some one on one help. They are all great guys and each have mastered the roll to perfection.
Additionally if you have vid of your attempts you can post, GEEK can prolly advise you on what you are doing wrong.

Keep the faith,
Tim

Last year, my rolls were going nose high. I found my problem to be in the setup wake/prejump. Make sure that you keep the ski level while prejumping, go into the wake flat. If you go in slightly nose high, you are more likely to roll nose high. Changing this got me all the way around late last year. Goodluck!

I too started flat water BR attempts last season... best I could pull was an inverted sub. However, now that I have watched the video Glory_Freestyle posted, I think I can see what I am doing wrong... It looks like I am rolling the wrong direction off my set up wave... or does that not make a difference?

Tim, Thanks for the info. I've got your river roll on my laptop and refer to it when I go to the river. Watching it helped me to slow down when I make my set-up wake.

Marsh, I'll keep that in mind and pay attention to the position of my ski on take-off.

I'm still not quite there (pulled one off at the end of last season but it was a fluke). Wearing a full face helmet helps, not just for protection (which you need) but it makes you less afraid of laying the pole down and getting your head over the front of the ski. There are lots of components to learn, so I've been trying to get each down before I go to the next:

First learn to make good setup wakes consistently. That's fairly easy. Keeping the nose high through the turn makes the wave bigger.

Next you need to get your timing dialed in on take-off. Nose stabs are great practice. Concentrate on a really good prejump - hop right and point the nose into the trough before you yank the bars left and nail it.

Next I started working on rotation, which was half about getting the right body position, and half about getting over the fear of the water and the ski so close to your face. To get the right position on my roundnose I always think of trying to take a bite out of the gas cap!

My final step is to work on height so I can get all the way round. That's mainly a matter of speed into the setup wake. This is the part I'm at now.

Like I said, I'm not quite there yet, but the four step program is working out OK.

Thanks Brit! The last 12 step program I was involved in didn't really pan out so well - perhaps this program with only 4 steps will be better!

Yeah - 12 is way too many. I think they have a 12 step program to cope with ADD but nobody ever finishes it....

I don't know if this makes any sense, but last night at the lake I started to get my set-up wakes to where I could really launch off of them. It was a bit of a revelation. Before I'd see a good launch ramp (of a set-up) about every 5th or 6th, but last night it was different. I was getting about 50%. It was right at dusk so I only got to rip off of it about 6 ot 7 times before I couldn't see good enough to do anymore.

I also noticed that I tend to ride around for 30 minutes to an hour before I try my first BR. I just practice making set-ups and build confidence until I can "feel it". Then after the first one I just go and go.

Going back out today to see what I can do, maybe I'll come back with good news and video.

Well, it was blowing like crazy at the lake which means there were lots of waves and no opportunity to do anything on flat water. Plus everybody besides SKYWALKER pooped out.

Every year I wait and wait until until "the waves" come. Every year I forget that, in Kansas, waves come with WIND. Lots and lots of it. So about this time every year I basically relearn how to ride in the waves and WIND.

It went pretty well, with the right inspiration, there were waves big enough to backflips (I think.)

I tried several BRs and they went pretty well - still too far back in the tray, but more comfortable with wave-riding, and the super short set-up time afforded by waves on waves (chop).

Tomorrow, I'm going to the river where it's always calm (it's in the city surrounded by trees and buildings.) I'll keep you informed!

I'm sure you could find some waves good enough to flip off of....

This is great stuff - I was dreaming of BR, now that I have the right tool (RN SJ with pipe, short pole and footholds) I will follow all this great advice untill I do it or I die! Still not sure about the pre hopping thing and the "s" turn. I understand that this is for momentum puropses, right?
