First ski! Bn44 or sbn 44!?

Hey guys i just got my first ski its a js 550. Seems to be all stock but the rev limiter appears to be deleted. I was told it ran but the kid couldn’t get it running when i showed up to buy it. I bought it anyway cause it was cheap and figured i could used it for parts if this one didnt work out.

I got a new battery for it and it turns over great and has spark. There was very bad gas in it so i’ve dumped and cleaned out the tank. Checked the fuel filter which is still stock. Cleaned out the fuel lines and have tried my best to clean out the head by pouring a little gas in and cycling it with the plugs out. It seems to be clearing out the head decent.

Im fairly certain it has a bn44 carb on it. Im sure its full of junk and needs a deep cleaning. Ive been doing some research and considering just ordering a new carb.

Should I get another bn44 or go for the sbn 44. I plan to keep this ski stock.

Sbn 44's are cheap and be easy enough to tune. Only thing is depending on the intake manifold you might need a spacer for it to fit.

Also;

1. Check compression; it will need to be about 120psi per hole for her to start/run well.
2. Do not turn it over unless you are also holding down the stop switch or you will fry your cdi.
3. @Rdrttoy probably has a decent shape bn44 he would make you a deal on.

Thanks it’s raining today so no logging... maybe I’ll have some time to work on it.

It’s seems to have an aftermarket power switch other that the kill switch installed. I’ve had that off so it’s not sparking will it’s still dry cdi?

I’ve been looking at another 1990 550sx. It has a lot of aftermarket parts and comes with boxes of extra parts. Would these parts be interchangeable for js550?
