First Post!!! What I need in a roundie...

Well I have been reading this site for about 4 months now. It is great and I have learned alot. I bought for the 06 season my first jetski, a 650 squarenose and learned alot on it. I sold it because the power was too low and I could not see putting all the money into it to make it what I need. My question is for a roundnose what needs to be done for the power to do something like a flatwater backflip. I know you can do them and I am not saying I can right now, but after years of buying and building things up I would like to buy something that is something I can grow into and wont limit my skills right now or in the future. I feel I learned the basics on the squarenose but need more power. So maybe some basic guidelines that I can use while I look for a new ski would be really helpful. THANKS!!!!

update your location.

search for mods.

what kind of riding? (lake or ocean)

for flatwater backies, you need power........more than 5K in engine alone, plus MAJOR hull mods (major is in all caps for a reason...)

but if this is your first ski, or just learning freestyle...forget backflips, learn how to ride, turn, sub, nosestab, barrell roll.....

oh, and welcome....you'll find more info here than you'll ever be able to process!

Im unfortunately riding lake and is almost always flatwater. I have had a lot of fun learning subs, stabs, a barrel roll is impossible on my 650. That is why I want a newer ski with the 701 in it. I have searched, alot. The best I have seen recently was the video of the kid doing a backflip on flat water off his own wake, that kind of bottom end is amazing, so I will look for what? 701 with porting a bpipe and a prop?, that kid didnt say he had 5k in his motor that seems excessive, I will keep looking, just wanted some ground ideas

you'll need about a 5mm stroker, plus porting, bpipe, dual 48's, lightweight hull, and just about everything else known to man to pull a flatwater backy. i dont know of anyone pulling a flatwater backy with a stock hull. I know its possible off a boatwake though.

who was it?

the only guys I know of doing flatwater backies are:

lenzi
lee stone
malone
fujisawa??

im sure there are a coujple more........but everyone of those guys are riding 30K+ ski's......

but here's the answer to the question:

roundnose mods:

LPW/Team scream/TLR/watecraft factory freestyle port job: 3-500
Bpipe: 5-700, with rejetted carbs
solas 13/15 concord cutback 350
ADA head 180 PSI 400-
Footholds: 1-200
modded ignition: static timing advance, msd enhancer or total loss
xmetal complete handlepole system

Wow, well that answers what I wondered, and yea I was watching that video, he is way close to landing it but does seem to have alot in that ski. I am not so worried about price, I love the sport and want to grow in it, I just wondered the basics of what I should be looking for when I buy my next one. I will keep looking and thanks for the great feedback!!!

If you're not worried about price then have a full custom boat made for you from Watercraft Factory, Wamiltons, XFT, etc. and a stroker lamey made from Paul at Lehr Perfromance or Chucky at Team Scream.

I wish I had $30000 laying around to try and learn a flatwater backie.

Good luck

Ok, I was not trying to say I had 30k to put in a boat, I want a roundie and didnt really want the sarcasm. Its cool I just wanted some advice and think I got what I was asking so thanks for the reply!! The list that Idok posted, seem like a good starting point so is what I will try and look for.

dont worry, the sarcasm...as well as the advice is FREE! :cheer:

the list I made for you is kind of the "generic" freestyle recipe......the parts listed are the BEST for this application...just go to any freeride, the majority of our ski's look identical under the hood..

here's a couple of pix of mysetups....

I didn't mean to come off as being sarcastic. I used to hear crap all of the time when I was a kid for how bad I was spoiled by my parents. It got pretty old. Now that I am in college I don't get a dime from them. My apologies.

I second everything IDOK said, but in my opinion I would try and find a boat that already has most of that stuff already on it. If you could save money by not having to buy a b-pipe, head, prop, etc. then thats more money you can put towards sending your motor to Paul for some "majic".

Good luck.

Are those wetjet cases in the second pic or were they just painted gold? I just recently learned that the old wetjet 701's were yamaha and were great engines.

What makes the wetjet 61x/61x better than the traditional yamaha 61x/61x?

Talking about cases, I was reading about the t and x cases and wondered if there was an external way to tell which is which. And am I right thinking only the X cases are in the SJ's and the T's in wetbikes and waveraiders?

If you take a look at IDOK's two pictures and focus in on where the carbs attach to the cases (aka intake manifold) you can see the difference between the tow cases. The left pic is a 62t case while the right pic is a 61x case.

From the factory the 62t came with dual carbs while the 61x came with a single carb. Now you can buy aftermarket manifolds to run a single carb on the 62t and dual carbs on the 61x.

yes, those are wetjet cases in that motor....

wetjet 61x and SJ 61x CASES are identical...but there are a couple of differnces...

some of the wetjet motor are identical to SJ motors.......the KRAZE came stock with a high compression head, 46 vs. 44 mm carb, and reed stuffers I think....

T cases are dual carbs...
X cases single carbs
6m6 (650 cases) are single carb as well....

here's a pic of that same top end on a set of T cases with a single carb manifold.....

And you are wrong about assuming that the suprejets came with 61x cases while the raiders and wetjet's came with 62t's.

The 96-07 superjet came with 62T cases while the pre 96 superjets (i.e. squarenose) came with 61x cases.

Originally the squarenose came with a 650 (6m6 cases), but sometime around 94-95ish (I think) they started coming with the 701 (61x cases).

I'm pretty sure the old wetjets came with the 61x while the old raiders came with the 62t.

Then if you really want to get into it even more you can start talking about cylinders.

Traditionally the 701 61x came with 61x cylinders while the 701 62t also came with 61x cylinders.

You mostly find the 62t cylinders on the 62t cases when the ski came with a 760.

To make it even more complicated now you see a lot of guys putting the 62t cylinder on the 61x cases.

The advantage of the 62t cylinder is that it is a more beafier cylinder that can be bored out further and the advantage of the 61x cylinder is the single carb which allows for easier tuning.

I hope I haven't confused you too much.
