Been riding a few years, but this summer was the first time to try rolling.
Sn w/stock 701, pipe and lightened flywheel.
Now the backie is still to come. Tried twice. Pulled out halfway through the first attempt and my lanyard came unhooked when I was launching for my second attempt. Both hurt like hell, so the next try will have to wait until spring.:popworm:

Ah, the ignorance of youth. I am surprised you're even trying a flatwater backy with a piped 701.

FYI, watch some videos. I have seen a backy pulled with aprox 800cc engine on a lightweight hull. Everything else has been 950cc plus.

well, i have a shortened sn hull -3" with a 701 and b pipe, and trim system

im starting to try them this summer and in daytona too

There is a big difference between surf and flatwater.

In the surf, I have personally witnessed dozens of backy's on completely stock ski's (with atleast straps, most had footholds).

This is just what I have personally witnessed of course.

LOL! Youth, huh? That's kinda funny. I'm not actually talking "flat" water though, so I'm not right on subject I guess. I just count the lake as flat water as opposed to the ocean.
The lake we ride when it's windy, and the other one we ride with the size of the cuisers.....the 701 isn't a problem. I believe it just takes balls and practice. Believe me, enough power and air isn't the issue. Sure, more hp would definatley help, but not needed imo. I guarantee my first attempt when I pulled out of my lean, I had plenty of air time. Just backed out half way through. It was my first ride on my ski after last winter's rebuild, and the first ride of the season. I promise ya, I'll nail one this coming season though...with the 701.:deal:

THAT SICK. LOVE YOUR SKI TOO DUDE! Good color choice.

My first Flatwater roll was after about a year and a 1/4 of riding a stand up on my current ski with current set up. 701 b pipe+ a few other little things. Granted riding the lake every day i possibly could helped too.

Nice Norcal !

My first Barrel roll and Backflip was on a Stock 750 sx with holds. IN surf
First Flatwater barrel was on same but ugly and took a long time.

First Flatwater Backy REALLY nosed in, was heavy surf hull with 888cc
and Wicked throw trim.

My First really complete Backy clean was on a waterlogged hull with
1000cc Xscream.. maybe I shouldnt call that me doing a backy...
But that took me For a RIDE into a backy.. lol

Surf you can do anything on anything. Standup wise.

Flat, is Alot more skill and timing and setup !

I have heard of people throwing Flat backies with 800cc and light weight ski.

you can certainly roll a limited SJ on flat but there is no way you can flip one.

I might be done working on rolls in flat water, It has cost me too much money already.

Pete,
Do you trim off waves at all? Even off a double up I seem to do better without trim.

I have a stock hull(as light as you can get one) and baby scream 701. I don't expect to ever get a flat water backflip, but I would like to make it off a double up.
If I get chest high waves I can hit them without much trouble.

Try it off a wave or boat wake first. Get used to being inverted before you try to do something flatwater.

Besides, you can get more height (longer timing for rotatation) not worry about creating the perfect setup wave, just focus on the actual roll or flip.

Wear a bucket, hold the F on, and give er hell.

Double up wake, no trim... waves no trim...
big boat wake no trim. small boat or flatwater.. trim.

Cool,
That's pretty much what I do. The biggest question was on the double up. I don't ever expect to do a flat water flip with my engine/hull, but I would like to get the double up down. I think i can get there....I was close on the couple tries I made this year.

Thanks.

Dont go into it to fast... you will bust threw the back of the double up...

And if the boats arent at a good speed and close enough, you will not get a good lip to toss you..

First bunch of times I tried double up I ate crap too. youll get it.

I would say go into it just on a plane. so nose is still high. as soon as the nose hits the whitewater part.. hang off the back pull strait armed, clamp it, and then when you pull back toward you with bars after you clamp it.. pull ski toward you and imeediatly look back for your landing, that will speed up your rotation.. I think that is most important, besides the timing.

That look back when you pull bars, and youll end up arching and looking back and you will get it.

Everyone has a big stick on the Internet. Make sure to get it on video.
Will do homeskillet. I'm not one of those internet supermen you're referring to. I don't talk the talk if I can't walk the walk.
But.....things might change afterall. I might be having some motor work done before spring, if the cash flow situation allows.

It is definitely easy to carry too much speed. The point is to go up not out. Everytime I get excited and blast through a small boat wake I end up short on rotation and long on distance.......and with something new hangin loose in my bilge :banghead:
