Few more turf questions.

I'm about to turf the tray and rub-rail area.

First off- there is a little lip on the bondline area where the top deck fits onto the bottom deck. The top deck lip does not quite match up with the bottom deck. I was wondering if you guys sand this to be equal? Or do you just turf to the edge of the top deck and let the bottom deck lip stick out?

Second- I am having a tough time trying to figure out how to make my template in the back for the padding and the turf. I think I will make the padding come back to the back edge but stop at the back edge and not fold it over. I will sand it down to come to a point so the turf can fold over the back edge easily.

Third- how far should I make the little tabs go out on the sides on the back like in the picture... I cant imagine where to stop the tabs where it will meet up with the bondline turf when I wrap that around in the next step.

Thanks.

1. either way. i would sand it nice so it wont hurt when picking up the ski.
2. rough cut, stick, semi rough cut, and finish cut. try to pad that edge as much as possible.
3.id go halfway past the gunwhales, close to where you got your cardboard.

1) Couldn't hurt, but necessary, if you use two layers or more of glue, it'll stick even to uneven surfaces

2) Stopping the padding at the back and sanding is exactly what I do when I turf a ski.

3) Half way or a little past will be good.

Is it cool to widen the rails using some padding? If you think it's a good idea, can you tell me how you do it? I have 8mm padding. Who does this? I was about to turf my rails tonight, but then read a few threads about widening the rails, and wondered if it's a good idea...

So you guys leave that edge as is then huh? Does that bottom hull edge stick out below the turf when you're done? or do you smash the turf over that ledge so it sticks to the bottom lip so you cant see it, and cut it off there.... see 2 pics above to clarify what I'm talking about...

To lay the tray bottom in 1 piece of turf, I made a general cardboard template, than cut it oversized by 3" on all sides, yes there is more waste, but not as much if you wind up short on your template (like I did my first time around)

As you work the turf from Firewall to Footholds (I like doing it this way, doesn't matter though, just the way I do it) use a rubber mallet and a paint stir stick. Just what I had laying around that wouldn't rip intot he turf, pound the turf inthe the crevaces.

Its honestly not hard at all. Take your time and it will look good. Try to run the sides of the tray/footholds with 1 piece. Looks very sano and its easily done.

If you're going to widen the rail (recommended) use a strip of flat (untextured) turf. Then when you trim the edge, cut it at a 45º angle so the water won't rip the edge.

It's bizzare that Xscream said to not widen the rail. Every boat I've seen from then has had wider rails...?

Really? The guy there I talked to seemed pretty confident about his answer... Pat wasnt available, so I talked to one of the other guys...

I dont have any untextured turf... should I use 8mm padding, or should I buy some untextured turf... or should I just turf the rails without widening.... is it really that much of an improvement???

I would not use the 8mm padding because it's not hard enough. If you don't have untextured turf, I would say don't worry about it. It's one of those things that makes putting your feet on the rails that much easier, and I like the handling of a wider railed boat better.

My current hull does not have widened rails, and now that I've ridden it for a half of a season, I will be widening them this winter.

That's just my opinion though.

You want to go 1/2 and 1/2 on a sheet of flat turf?? Do you currently have any flat turf? I would want to get started in the next week or so...

BTW- the guy at Xscream messaged me today, and told me they DO normally widen the rails...

the boat he happened to look at to see if they widened the rails was just one that they did NOT happen to be widening.
