Have a local who rides a custom Ti Fatbike for single track riding. you do not have to have snow or sand. It is just a different kind of bike.

Matt, I do not think that I have much more than 1000 miles on my Full Suspension bike in the past 5 years....... How you finding the time. I know you ride your road bike to work and back. Damn Hippie.

It's mostly in my commute. 9 months of the year I log about 40 miles/day. I do longer weekend rides, too, but they don't make up the majority of my riding. Commuting 52 weeks a year racks up miles.

What's 'early'?
I used to get to the office before 7 a.m. even with the bike. But now it is cold and dark in the mornings and three week nights I teach late at night so I just go in late most of the time now. I am in a rare situation that allows this level of commuting. Close enough to work, a cooperating climate, and the bicycle infrastructure to make it work.
Now if only I had more MTB trails close by. WA is supposed to be the #1 state for MTB, but I am on the wrong side of the state.
Oh well. It's not like I have time, anyways.

On topic: I might get 700x30 Cyclocross knobbies for the road bike for the winter. I have another 1,000 - 2,000 miles left on the current tires, but once they wear out I might just try some 'fat' dirt tires.

I would have to leave around 5:30am. Plus there is nowhere to shower. If I got really nasty. I have done it on weekends when I was not required to be here.
