is it mandatory to modify or run aftermarket cdi's on a motor with a b pipe and ported cylinders, could i be hitting my rev limit?

It's not mandatory, but the pipe will let the motor rev out much more quickly, so most people mod the stock CDI or go to MSD to up the rev limiter. I'd say you were almost certainly hitting yours. It's not doing any damage, but you're missing out on some top end.

well i did some prodding around witha multimeter last night, i think part of my tuning problem could be in my coil, i can't get a consistant reading on my secondary windings withthe msd coil that was supposed to be " new" , so i went to put in the coil that was inthe ski, guess what , the resistance on that was like 18,000 wtf( i guess that is part of the reason i had trouble last year)

so i had a kawi coil i rebuilt and have not used yet, the meter give perfect readings for that and it starts with it in, will try her out today with that

i am wondering if that is why it is needing to be leaned out on top, perhaps i am getting poor spark at higher rpms and it is giving me a false rich condition

ski4, I did find out a LONG time ago that you Can't run the MSD junk coil without closing up the plug gap!!! The MSD coil is less voltage output than the stock coil! Set the sparkplug gap at .020 and use non-resister plugcaps and plugs...That WILL fix your misfire!!!

seriously?? i would imagine more out put voltage

putting a stock good coil on today did not fix my stunted hi end though. damn damn
good news is as i continue to lean out the high speed adjusters it is getting better and better

now i can get to nearly a full 7/8th's open throttle before it starts to break up

but the scary thing is this, when i grab that last 1/8 th throttle now it stalls out right away?

could i stll be that rich?????????

soon i will have to jet down again at this rate and that scares me since i am now at what factory pipe recommends for a high speed jet:scared: :scared: :scared:

well, before i broke my face on madmats ski in think i may have it finally. 132.5 on the big end and 80 on the pilot,
i finally found wot. it has not let me do that till today, just a few more tweaks and i think i am gold
seems strange but as matt_e was saying a ported motor may require less jetting, oddly i needed more down low and less up top
