My X2 is being over hauled. I bought the new cooling tubes from the local metal place.
I went there today to buy my exhaust tubing. I told them I needed marine tubing for my exhaust. They told me they do not sell marine tubing. I was confused, they sold me the stuff before for my cooling. They said they only sell 304 stainless and I needed 316. I was pretty pissed since installing the cooling tubes was a big job.
So I've been reading and what I have found is that 316 is slightly more corrosion resistant than 304, but 304 is stronger. 316 is recommended for exhaust, while 304 for nuts, bolts and other fasteners.
Anyway, does any of this really matter? My X2 isn't a yacht sitting in the water all the time. It's used in the salt a few dozen times a year, flushed after every use, and in the fresh water a few dozen times a year. I don't think using 304 will be a problem (from what I just read). Otherwise I have to order some 316 which will take me a while to get at about 50% more cost.
Any advice from people who know more about metal? If I can't buy local, I need to order this stuff asap. Thanks.
I was worried about using aluminum that wasn't annodized, and thin walled stainless shouldn't be any heavier anyway.
Thanks.
Edit: Anything wrong with the stainless hardware sold at places like Ace? I usually use their hardware. It's stainless, doesn't specify the grade. I'm assuming it's 304 but I really don't know.
