So I am contemplating adding some inserts for my flatwater boat.....................

Has anyone had any luck with epoxying al inserts to the hull to hold a small tank?

What epoxy do you use, and what size is the base of the insert that is epoxied to the hull?

TIA

I've just made some for an EME, the area that contacts the hull is about 50mm diameter (2 inch) I roughed up the aluminium and the hull and used a methacrylate adhesive, connected a tank strap to it and with all my force it stayed put.

I tried using 5200 for my kart tank mounts and epoxy and thickener for the battery in my new hull. Lasted about a day. I ended up glassing both in and haven't had a problem since.

Im thinking of making a 2" sq plate with a 1/2" diameter boss welded to it, punching out a hole in the glass, and laying the sheet over the whole thing, while using epoxy on the bottom too

I made a layup of some carbon on a sheet of glass, using peel ply on the top layer to squeegee out the excess resin and leave to a good bonding surface for later. Then used a 2" hole saw to cut out the "washers". Underneath, there is a SS insert (1/4-20) epoxied in. Use good epoxy mixed with 404 and cabosil. Don't forget to scuff up the hull area where you are going to glue it down. See pix below.

It's real easy to make strong attach points.

Very Clean work Flash. If you are reinforcing you can just use the OEM Yamaha tank and waterbox mounts and slice the carbon or glass or whatever you are using and just slide them in under the reinforcement layer where you want them. No bolts or inserts needed. I did this in my Rev.. But if you are lputing them in after final layer then Flash has the ticket here. Very nice and clean look. I will probably just plexus them down in the new carbon WDK hull and attempt to make them look as clean as flash has here.
