SX/SXi/SXi Pro Engine took a beating

Had some bad luck with my 02 SXI this weekend. Something chipped/broke off in the engine and destroyed the rear piston and head while riding. The crazy part is it ran long enough to get back to shore. See pictures:

My question is what do you think my next step should be. I am obviously going to pull the motor and remove the cylinders. Do you think I could save the cylinders and have them bored out? Then install new pistons and replace anything broken? I don't know if I should go that route or order a whole new motor from somewhere like SBT. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not a mechanic but can handle some jobs like re-building carbs but never had an engine have a problem like this.

yeah it will run as long as you have fuel, ignition, and air, and you're making some compression.
as long as the cylinders aren't gouged out then you should just have them bored out and get a new head and pistons.

The crank was my concern. Do you think that will need to be replaced? If so, it is probably cheaper or cost about the same as getting a new engine. Anyone have any advice or experience that has done this before?

Just happened to me a couple weeks ago my engine looked identical to that one, had to buy new cylinders, mine was unusable, got my head milled and domed and new crank and seals. Just got it all back together last weekend and runs better than ever. I'm also sending my spare stock flywheel to #zero for one of his lightened ones
