cheers guys the more and more i think about its got to be the bendix as this does rattle and the chatter is there at low rpms

riva list the spring and weight holding spring so should have now problem in getting them over here

There should be about 1/4 inch clearance between the couplers. They should NOT touch!

forget trying to repair the bendix. If its toast, its toast, replace it. Not necessarily with a new one, but a good used OEM one. NOT aftermarket.

As matt mentioned the couplers should NOT be touching at all. Take a pic if you can. You should be able to take a metal ruler and it should be flat all around the circumferance of the couplers. Mabye you are misaligned? They should be 'on par' with eachother with a small gap between eachother (1/4 inch)
