engine bearings

hi guys what a pain in the a#@s
just rebuilt my internal bearing housing fitted new engine mounts and jss superwire coil leads and after being inspirared by shonuff ski build!!!! i to painted my engine bay cleaned everything fitted fancy color fuel line new cooling line the lot!!!! it looks great so took her out yesterday for my first outing for a fortnight and i think she over heated i think the sensor kicked in because she on what felt like half power (never had this before) that aint the worst of it coz when i got her home rerouted the cooling:banghead: then fired her up and now all i can hear is this terrible chatter at different revs

any ideas guys im stumped

Could be the starter bendix stuck in the engaged position. This will kill your power and can make a chatter noise due to the starter being revved at super high RPM. Pull the flywheel and the bendix, usually the weight holder is broken and the weights have slung out or are hung. I would also rebuild or replace the starter as it will probably not last if you ran the ski very long with the starter spinning. :banghead:

well just took the bendix off this is the photo of it straight after i took the cover off do you think there togather?????

well took bendix apart strecthed main spring and re assembled

now the weights are held in by spring does this break down???

as i only ran it for not even ten mins do you think my starter would be ok??

If the bendix stuck out I woudl replace it with a good one. Try and find one used. If it gets stuck out again you could ruin your flywheel and stator.

Sometimes the spring can be salvaged, but the thing I see break on the bendix is the carrier that keeps the weights seperated. They usually have one or two good sections and a broken one thus the weights can pop out and either lock up the bendix or get loose and trash your flywheel or stator. Like meatball said, you might be better off to just go ahead and replace it and be done. As for the starter, if it still works then just run it if it sounds normal. I have seen them keep working after being abused alot longer that you ran it. Glad you found the problem, good luck :biggthumpup:

but when i had my bendix apart last night the weights rattle in there holder is this right???
i assume they must move so they can spin out

well cheers to keefer for the pionter:biggthumpup: but i had the bendix in bits and it was not sticking ran here up still chatter:banghead: so took the cylinder case of :bigeyes: to get to the starter (heard this was the best way? lol ) striped the starter nothing wrong there!!!!!!:banghead: :banghead:

so the only thing left i thought to check was the little ends and i cant see anything wrong with them either

any other ideas going to order new bearings tomorrow to see if they are worn if not then i will have to take it too a shop

Can you repost what you said please? No offense, but I can barely make out what happened. Also, if you want to do a diy, the only thing you can do is a homemade port job, but that takes lots of research, time, a hone and mabye new pistons if you one up.

Did you say you stripped your starter gear? Its most likely the bendix that you need to replace. One of the washers or spring could be missing in the flywheel cover or back of the case.

i had a spark problem and had ordered some of jss wire with plugs whilest waiting i noticed my couplers where to far apart so went to move my engine upon doing so i noticed a mount had gone so i pulled the engine to find 3 had gone in total and that it had also done the internal housing bearings i replaced all with new parts.
put engine back in ,installed the new leads fired her up at home for 1-2 mins max and all was fine to her done beach rode for not even 10 mins and i had only what felt like half power, took her back in and once on the trailer with hood of fired her up, to hear this nasty chatter noise coming from the area between engine and tank
i have since checked my bendix and starter(both ok imo) and now as a last resort pulled the cylinders off to look at the little ends which look ok to me

just to clarify this chatter noise is more prominent when the revs are decreasing it is less at higher revs

Its probably the bendix... That pic you showed had it engaged. Did you properly test this? If a bearing is going, it will go, and you will know it, you will lose compression and it will make a metal clanking noise. This is starter or pump related.

You need a spare flywheel cover.
Cut it in half, to where the bendix will be held in place, but nothing else.
Then start & run the engine.

matt beat me to it. Best way to test bendix is to hack up a flywheel cover and watch it in action. Sure its not pump related? The bendix shouldnt rattle when you shack it. It should have a spring around the weights on the outside and it should seem like a solid piece. The pic you showed had it engaged, if its engaged while the engine is running, then I would naturally assume it would rattle.

When you redid the motor mounts did you properly align the motor?

was thinking about that earlier could it be the coulpers

they are nice and tight put it this way i cant fit a metal ruler inbetween them

so the bendix should not at all rattle full stop

if thats the case then i think that could be it as mine does rattle even after its greased up:bigeyes:

this could cheaper than i thought coz you can get a new spring ring:biggthumpup:
