electrical problems.....need advice

Well, I just got my shiny *new* b-pipe chamber from fpp, and I slapped my ski back together. I went to the river today with both of my skis anicipating riding the rn with the new chamber. I started the rn up before I left and it ran great. I also started it up at the boat ramp before I put it in the water and it ran great. However, when I put it in the water, I hit the start button.....and it hit one lick then sounded like it took a shiat under the hood. I thought some fumes may have ignited, but that doesn't seem to be the case because the biatch would not start back up (the starter wouldn't even turn over - no noise, clicks, nothing). I backed my truck back down and loaded up the rn and unloaded the square and rode for a couple hours. After I got home, I pulled my ebox on the rn, and expected a blown fuse.....but that was not the case. I jumped the relay with a screwdriver and the rn fired right up. I switched out the relay with the relay in my square, but it didn't fix the problem. Any idea what the culprit may be? the crap in my rn ebox has some corrosion, but I cleaned all the terminals, and it didn't help. Any suggestions? I honestly am reluctant to think it is my start/stop assembly. :brap:

Hey Steve, been there done that for last 3 months-I SUCK AT ELEC PROBLEMS-move the ground from the back of starter motor to the frt timing cover and see if that don't do it-OR-simply add a quick ground from batt to timing cover to see if that fixes it, a 2nd ground dam sure won't hurt. That was the LAST dam thing I tried cuz I have never had a 'lack of ground issue' w/any of the ski's I have owned:banghead:

Hope this gets u in right direction.

i will second the idea to try another ground. my rn, my friends sn, and another dudes fx1 all have had that same thing happen. all of us ran new, different grounds and that fixed the problem.

It's amazing how much easier it is to track down problems in an electrical system without beer in the veins. I got up this morning and started probing some wires. I was getting a voltage reading of ~10 back at the relay at the brown wire when hitting the start button, however, my voltage reading at the batt was ~12 (hey, wasn't I the one that said I was reluctant to think it was the switch? hehe...it wasn't...keep reading). Anyway, I opened up the kill switch assembly and it as pretty clean. However, I went ahead and cleaned all the contacts in each part of the switch assembly. I checked the resistance between the switch and the brown wire back at the ebox...and wtf?? No continuity reading. Hmmm...low voltage and no continuity reading. I have a problem somewhere with the brown wire. I found the connector outside of the ebox where the red and brown wire are and I popped it open. Hmmm...that brown wire terminal looked pretty corroded. I checked for continuity between the ebox and the connector and I had it. I checked from the switch to the connector, and I did not have it. I popped both terminal ends out of the plastic connector casing and cleaned them up real good. I popped them back into the plastic and then remated the connector ends. I checked the resistance from red to brown inside the ebox, and what do you know. I had a little under 1 ohm. Fuggin piece o' shiat little bitty azz crappy corroded connector.:nutkick:I hooked everything back up that I had dismantled and hit the start button and she fired right up. I'm ridin the roundie today!! :brap:

FWIW, if you can turn it over by jumping the relay, the ground is good.

Before switching grounds, check continuity between block and neg battery terminal.

Just had a similar problem with Suzi's SN - turned out I had a bad start/stop switch AND a broken brown wire just where it entered the e-box. That took a bit of finding, and the only thing that gave it away was that the brown wire seemed a little more flexible than the red wire right at the grommet. Fun, fun....
