650/X-2 Dumb Question?

I am new to jetskis and just picked up a 1989 650 sx. Took the motor out last night and cleaned everything up and put it all back together. My question is besides the gas mix to jetskis require oil. Like a two stroke dirtbike does for its transmission. I know theres no trannys or anything in jetskis but is there something else. When i was messin around on the motor i saw a black tab which looked like where you would put oil in. What Kind, How much, How do you drain it, is there a jetski filter? Any help would be much appreciated.

That's an inspection cover for the magneto/flywheel area. While it's not uncommon to find previous owners to have put oil in there, it doesn't belong there. Leave it alone.

if there's is a small oil pump on that cover you asked about filling with oil then there is still premix on it. There's also an oil tank the sits on top/next to the gas tank. if it's changed to remix then there will be a plate blocking off where the oil pump went.

Look at the attached pic. On the front of the flywheel cover there is a small pump. It is the oil injection pump.
Look at the gas tank in the picture. There is an oil tank on top of the gas tank.

If your ski has this pump instead of a flat alluminum block off plate on the flywheel cover, and it has an oil tank, your ski still has the stock oil injection set up.

If this is the case, you do not need to premix the fuel, and you do need to put oil in the oil tank. The pump will premix the fuel for you.

I would recommend that if this is the case, you purchase a block off kit and remove the stock oil pump system AND PREMIX the fuel.

If you premix and have working oil injection, your 50:1 mix will end up being a 25:1 mix. It will run, it will not cause damage, but it may lose power and smoke a lot.

If you are not sure, PREMIX the fuel until you can have someone knowledgable help you out.

Other than gas/oil premix, or gas + oil tank, there are no other fluids needed.

Sounds good! the last question i have for you guys is the fuel knob where you turn it to one side for reserve and one side for on. Which way is which

i think left is on, middle is off, right is reserve. but i could be wrong. im getting rid of mine though and just running everything through reserve with fuel filters.
