On my SXR one of the pistons is missing a chunk. it looks like the ring caught the exhaust port by the scoring in the cylinder and the looks of the ring. so my question is due i have to tear the case apart to check the crank, or is it safe to rebuild the top end? by the way it is a ported cylinder with stock pistons.

once I had that happen and I didn't open up the case. I missed a chunk in the case and had to do it all over again, I opened up the case the second time.
i guess that means i have to split the cases. do i split the cases and just clean the crank and stuff, or am i looking for something to be wrong with the crank?

clean out any debris and check the crank for any obvious problems and for bearing damage.

Also get some new OEM crankshaft seals for it too, Don't use aftermarket replacement seals!
thanks anything else? where is th best place to send my cylinder to get it bored and honed and a new set of pistons?
You should get the pistons first and you probably have a local machine shop that can do it. They should want the pistons to bore them to.

I second that
i have seen try and save some money and then end up paying more
Some times the more expensive option is the cheapest
Getting a GOOD shop to do your work also gives you a warranty as well
im in vegas, but i plan to send the cylinder out. i have not found any good shops here in vegas.
