Dumb, but curious question

Has anyone ever NOT used a clear coat on the bottom of there stand-up? I sprayed mine black a few months back and have been waiting for the weather to get a little warmer before clearing it. However, I was curious if anyone has just left it alone after the first coat of paint? If so how did it hold up?

I'm am only asking because last time I went through this (spraying it black and cleared it with marine grade clear coat) two seasons back, it chipped toward the end of the season so I am wondering if it is even worth the aggravation? Because sanding it to re-do it is a BIATCH! lol

Thoughts?

It is going to chip from hitting rocks and such when you beach it.

Clear it, then hit the bottom (underside) with some 400 grit paper to roughen it up some.

if you clear it and it is smooth, there is some friction from the clear coat being so smooth. I still have race blood in my veins. If you run it up on sand a few times it will do the same thing!

I get you(I think)... so by sanding it it will decrease the chances of it chipping due to the rocks not being able to grab as easy??????

Nothing to do with rocks.

Forget I said anything.

You are going to get chips regardless unles the bottom never comes in contact with anything. Which is impossible.

Paint it, Ride it, Enjoy it.

What kind of paint is on it right now? Doesn't matter what paint you use, beaching it is going to destroy it but some are more durable than others. The other way to look at it is, if you don't clear it, you can probably touch it up easier.

Lol That is exactly what I'm thinking! If it will never stay pretty....why clear it?! Because the clear is a biatch to sand off rather than just re-spraying it ya know?

Or, what about only clearing the sides then and part of the front? Kinda how people sometime only paint that area however, I could clear it. Thoughts on that?

I always just painted to right under the lip. Only bottom I ever painted was jmeadlock's FX1. Painted the entire ski Red.
Took alot of paint! tried to fix some of the bad spots. It was not perfect by any means. But I only spray Singlestage.

i laid black fiberglass on the bottom of my hull so even after repeated beachings it doesnt wear through a thin layer of paint. looks great
