Driving time to Pismo

I'm trying to get an idea how long it will take to drive from Portland, OR to Pismo and which route to take.

We hope to leave Thursday evening and drive straight through. Want to know when to leave and when we would get there Friday. Also wondering about the trip time back.

How long should it take with a trailer? Plenty of power to pull the trailer so no hill delays there. Just considering the wonderful 55 MPH California speed limit on trailers. I plan to do about 63 MPH in CA.

Someone said to take I-5 all the way to Hwy 41 and cut over there. Is this a good idea? All the map web sites route you through San Jose. Might hit morning rush hour doing that.

Bad idea, all the Sacramento guy's say go all the way down to Kettelman city and go west.

Sounds reasonable. That's around what I was thinking. Gorilla was thinking almost 16.

I tried Google maps, Yahoo maps and Mapquest. They were all within minutes of each other at around 13 hours 40 minutes.

Thanks for the confirmation on the Hwy 41 route.

Gorilla and Google said the law for trailers is 55 but few people go anywhere near that slow. Considering what we pay in taxes I don't want to give the government any more money than I need to.

I've had one ticket (2002) since 1991. Last accident my fault 1979. I have been know to have some fun driving.

I've had my days of speed and thrills. Last May I retired my chipped Audi Quattro (10 pounds boost instead of the standard 4 pounds) that I used to run up to 130MPH (tire speed limit) rather quickly on trips to central Oregon years ago. It had 247,000 miles on it. It kicked butt on the original engine and got 800 miles to a quart of oil.

It's "rusting" comfortably on a friends 20 acres in the country after being beat to crap driving a rough trail on the farm many, many times. The three feet of air every time at the end of the trail finally killed it.

did 13 hrs 10 mins down to surf slam and under 13 on the way back. I live two minutes above d town p town-

Taking 5 ->41 adds roughly 19 miles but will definitely save you time in the long run because you can drive 65/70 with a trailer and won't really stick out. I do recommend you get past Sacramento before morning rush hour though as it can be pretty nasty.

It's a light trailer so we were thinking of using a car instead of the truck to save around half ($180) the fuel costs. More gas for the skis!

The trailer speed limit should add a hour of so of time each way.

you will see that you dont need to follow it when you are getting passed by Bakersfieldians doing 95 with a 35foot toyhauler

I've found that travel time listed by google is usually pretty accurate when towing. I usually just follow the posted speed limit for vehicles not towing and don't push my luck.
