Does Advancing Your Timing Make Your Engine Run Rough?

Does advancing the timing on a Superjet with a MSD enhancer make it run rough at lower RPM? I advanced mine slightly, with several other changes, and now it runs a little rough when you are going very slow.

Last year my Advent ignition made it run a little rough at low rpm also. When I changed to the MSD it was a lot smoother.

I have the motor out now and I am debating changing it back to the stock timing marks.

Very advanced timing can make the engine run rough. Others do it, but I'd stick with the stock timing w/the enhancer. Safer margin w/pump gas.:smile:

Why not just use the stock cdi w/rev limiter removed and advance the timing a bit?

i believe the msd advances the timing more at low rpm, then retards it at high rpm ( a little safer)

i'm running stock cdi w/o rev limiter but no advance just cause i dont want to worry about it.

I'll change it back to the stock setting just to be safe. I will post my results after I do it.

i did mine last week too, (advance like 1-2 degrees on the stator with msd) i think it starts a little harder and seems to idle rougher, i may just crank the idle up a bit to see if it smooths out.

Robert how many mm from the stock timing mark do you think you are advanced? I'm am a hair over 1mm and it is real rough under 1300 rpm. Let us know if the stock settings helps!

the circumfirnence on the stator plate is very close to 360
i think you will find its close to 1mm = 1 degree

I was at least 3mm. I have it back together but I won't have it on the water until the weekend.

# 1 key to proper tuning for Hi-perf motors is to use a pointer and dial indicator and CHECK W/ TIMING LIGHT! When you start doing that you will find that there are a lots of motors that are simply not right!!:bigeyes:
Take example, You have your stator redone by Jet Ski Solutions, rewind to much better winding :arms: and that will effect the timing quite a bit!! Sometimes you use all different parts from parts ski's and that also can change timing as well! MY ADVICE...Don't guess, You need to KNOW how much timing that you are running so you can adjust it to fit your compression ratio's and timing curves.:cool2:

Chuch, how does the better winding affect timing - an advancing effect?

I am guessing - The EM field of a better coil (better winding) will be stronger, triggering the igntion sooner.

I put it back to stock and it may be a little better but it is hard to tell. It is not as smooth as it was last year with the B limited chamber and 61X cylinder. I am running a 760 cylinder with a shortened Blaster mod chamber this year.
