Do you bake salt into your cylinders ?

I know an engine builder who maintains that when u are done for the day in saltwater u should not start it up and blow the water out...instead he says u should backflush it first with fresh water before starting it because it bakes the saltwater into the cylinder cooling cavities ? crazy concept ? what do you think ? :reporter:

Based on years of riding saltwater and blowing it out every time I rode, I'd say that builder is wrong.

While it may build up just a little, maybe, it is going ot be in the lower portion of the water jacket which doesn't get that hot during operation anyway.

I never could understand why such a large porportion of people think salt water is so toxic to your motor, I EAT salt on my French fries every day!

if im reading this right..... any builder that tells you to run water through your engine before starting it is a complete idiot.

Not really, it depends on how your cooling is setup. I have separate circuits for exhaust and engine, so I can flush the engine without running it if I want.

Same here Darin, I have a seperate dedicated line to the pipe...this way I can flush the engine without running it and if for some reason it will not start.

But regarding topic what this builder is talking about is that it adds to the salt corrosion build up in the cylinders by heating it up when "blowing it out."

Be more worried about not washing your stainless steel Magnum Pump out, the salt causes little puddle holes, noticed this when I took my pump out the weekend.

My take on it is he/you are over thinking it. He may have a valid idea but it doesn't matter in the end.

If you want perfect looking water jackets don't ride in the salt.

when my motor finally blew after two years of salt use (i maybe flush every 15-20 rides or if it is going to sit for more than a week) and when i took the head off the cooling jackets looked like brand new, the zinc was gone but zero corrosion..i recently dissembled a "freshwater" motor and the thing was heavily corroded..im not saying not to flush but im saying that riding in the salt IS NOT going to ruin your motor..its funny how paranoid people are about that
