Do I need to open up the engine further?

Is that a little rust on the crank? That in itself is not so much of a worry, possible corrosion of the bearings/pins/surfaces is. How long has it been sitting and do you know if it was properly fogged before storage? It looks a little 'dry' for a fogged engine.

Gasoline? You crazy Eastern Euros! I would suggest you switch to a mineral degreaser (far less volatile, and less chance of you passing out from the fumes). Personally, I like to soak items in gentle solutions overnight (I'm getting increasingly more patient and less in need of instant gratification in my old age). All the gunge comes straight off.

Good luck with the resurrection. Oh, and my brother once set our garage alight when the gasoline he was using to clean his dirt bike came into contact with a heater. Crazy Western Euro (we're English)!

Video here:

I'd say it's been sitting atleast 5 years or more and I wouldn't know if it's been fogged because my dad bought it off some guy, it wasn't ours. There is some oil visible inside as you can see from the videos though, I wouldn't know really. Had it been fogged they would probably also run it on freshwater to get rid of the saltwater but that obviously hasn't been done... Hope you can see some more details in the video I took. I can take more pictures if you guys need to make a better judgement, just say what you want to see. Thanks for helping!

Since your this far ya my as well pull it down all the way. Give the bore and pistons a good inspection and if all is well, hone out the cylinders, install some new rings, and replace crank seals. Do it right and you will have a fresh engine that should last you a long time. If you throw it back together you have no way of knowing if its going to have compression.

Just be prepared to buy some helicoils.

Compression was fine, I tried it when it was closed up. And the piston and cilinder seem in great shape

Well, throw it back together if your certain. It could run forever..

The engine in my js440/701 conversion came out of a 1995 wave raider that was all original. The guy i got the ski from said if had not ran in 10 years. I did a comp check and it passed with 150 in both holes, so i rebuilt the carb and she fired right up. I have ran at least 50 tanks threw that engine and it spends a ton of time on the rev limiter lol.
