300/440/550 DIY fuel pickup

Hey guys, I've been lurking the forums here for info for a long time, but I finally had to join. I have an '87 JS300 that I've had for a while that I'm currently in the process of rebuilding. My fuel pickup was very brittle from being 30 years old, and somehow broke when I was removing the handlepole the other day.

So my question is, has anyone built a diy fuel pickup? I was thinking of making an aluminum disc, soldering in barbs, and using copper or aluminum tubes for the pickups, and using an external fuel filter instead of strainers. Has anyone done anything like this? Should I scrap the idea and just buy an aftermarket one? All the OEM ones I've found online are used and look just as brittle as mine.

Also, has anyone deleted the fuel tap and reserve function and added an electronic fuel gauge? I'm thinking of doing this if I make my own pickup to simplify the carb feed. Less parts to fail seems better. And I could put the fuel gauge either where the fuel tap selector was, or where the oil feed gauge was, since I've already deleted the oil feed.
