Disappointed In People....

As many know, I've been parting out an SJ for the last week. This past weekend I get a call while I'm on the water no less. I answer it. A guy from PWCtoday says he saw my ad and wanted the motor. I specifically asked what he wanted... ie shortblock, with or without electronics, etc. He said he would take it with the stator and flywheel, but no electrical box. OK I said but I will need a deposit before I crate it and ship it. I will provide you with a shipping quote once it's crated and then you can pay me for the balance. OK and we hung up. Two mins later he calls back, I don't want the stator or flywheel now. OK I said. I really didn't want to pull apart the motor because I just wanted to get it out of my garage, but he said he was serious. No problem. I wake up Sunday morning early before I was scheduled to go to the beach so I could strip the entire engine down to the shortblock now. Off comes the front cover, ******** I don't have my flywheel puller on me. Off to Autozone to rent one, come back, get the flywheel off, pull the stator, pull the exhaust, pull the carb, pull the coupler, done. Take pics and email it to him to be sure we were in agreement with exactly what he was expecting. I even took a picture of the cylinder which shows no scoring whatsoever (even shows hone marks still). The compression gauge shows 155 psi in each cylinder. I call to let him know I shot the pics over. He looks, everything is OK. Good he says. Today he was supposed to go to the bank and get me the deposit. No deposit as of 10PM. I call him and guess what? He backs out because the outside of the engine has some paint chipping off!!!:shooter3: :shooter3: :shooter3: Mind you, he was going to use all of his parts (head, pipe, etc). I kid you not, a wire wheel would clean this thing up in 2 mins. So now I've breached gasket surfaces and someone who would have been able to bolt this engine in and go, can longer do that. This stuff is just aggravating at times....

Not trying to be a tool but that does look pretty rough. Wire brush that thing, paint it and sell it. If it is good mechanically just clean it all up. What is up with that sleeve castin mismatch on the cylinder?

I think all yamaha's have that mismatch. I think the pealed paint scarded him away because it's a sign of overheating. I cracked open a 650 that was untouched since 90 when it was born, I thought it was dead because of age so I pulled it appart. I was amazed with the motor. It still had the hone marks, the burn pattern did not extend any where close past the domes. The onlything really wrong with the motor was the reeds were curled back like you wouldn't belive. The carb lookes like hell too. What I am trying to get at is a stock yami is bomb proof.

That's normal for 6M6 cylinders. The port in the sleeve is actually more narrow and shorter than the port window in the casting.

1) Why go through the trouble if he hasn't even paid you.

2) If as you say "I kid you not, a wire wheel would clean this thing up in 2 mins." Then why wouldn't you take the same 2 minutes and clean it up..after all you are selling and don't you want it to look good.

3) You make it sound like he inconvenienced you by calling. Unless you specify, someone selling should be prepared for contact. Sometimes people want to hear a voice before they hand over cash.

4) I can sympathize with you but this could have been avoided (point #1).

5) I bet this will not happen again :)

-Hope you sell this stuff Doug

but then again, if he says it IS in rough looking condition and is trying to sell it that way, I would imagine he expected a few 'complaints' about its appearance. At least I hope so, cuz I would.

I've seen most 6m6 motors peel like this from the salt water. I told him every detail of the motor and provided pics, just like I have with everyone else that I've sold parts to from this ski. I don't think I could be a more honest seller actually. I will infact take a wire wheel to it, degrease with some carb cleaner, slap some paint on it, then call it a day.

Live and learn.

That doe’s look nasty should clean it up to sell wire brush and paint. I would have not purchased it looking like that either. Sorry My 2cents.

youll get more for it with a wire wheeling and some paint. it doesnt have to be an awesome job and you dont even have to disassemble it. just make it purdy for the camera.

My issue is this.... I showed pictures to the guy before hand. He knew what it looked like before he contacted me via phone. It shouldn't have been a surprise when he received the final pics if he saw the motor prior. I honestly feel he just used the paint as a poor excuse because he wanted to back out. This post wasn't to bring up the fact of a bad paint job but rather the deal that went south after I did as he asked.
